David Cadena Jr. was a devoted public servant, a hardworking professional, and a loving father whose life was defined by integrity, dedication, and quiet leadership. A good man with a strong work ethic, David spent decades serving the communities of the San Antonio area, earning the respect of colleagues and city leaders alike.
David began his career in public service in the early 80s as a Senior Inspector for Building and Zoning with the City of San Antonio. Through years of consistent effort and deep knowledge of building standards, zoning regulations, and public safety, he built a reputation as a trusted authority in building inspection and code compliance. His work helped ensure that neighborhoods, businesses, and public spaces met the standards necessary to protect the health and safety of the community.
His career continued to grow as he worked his way into leadership roles, including serving as a Director for the City of Balcones Heights. In 2011, he went on to serve as Building Services Director for the City of Windcrest, further demonstrating his commitment to public service and municipal excellence. Throughout his professional life, David was a well-known and respected figure in local building regulation. After a long and meaningful career, David eventually retired from the Cities of San Antonio, Balcones Heights, and Windcrest, leaving behind a legacy of professionalism, accountability, and service.
Beyond his career, David’s greatest pride was his family. He is survived by his daughter, Carol, who resides in Louisiana, and his two stepchildren, Patricia and Christopher, all of whom he loved dearly. He taught his children the value of a strong work ethic, showing them through example the importance of responsibility and perseverance. Even more importantly, he encouraged them to follow their hearts and do what they love, believing that fulfillment comes not only from hard work, but from passion and purpose.
In his later years, David treasured the time he had to enjoy family and friends. He especially loved visits from his stepson Christopher and his beloved grandchildren, Riley, Quincy, Cassie, Tyler, and Noah. He always lit up when he spoke about seeing them, and their presence brought him immense joy. He also had a special place in his heart for his granddog, Oliver, who would often sit in his lap or curl up beside him in bed, offering comfort and companionship.
David found great happiness in spending time with his sister, Mary; his dear friend Carmen, whom he never stopped affectionately referring to as his “wife”; his niece, Nina; and his stepdaughter, Tricia. These moments of laughter, closeness, and connection were among his most cherished.
David had a presence that was larger than life, matched by a contagious smile that drew people to him. He remained loving, sharp, funny, and mischievous right up to his last days, leaving those around him with memories filled with warmth, laughter, and love.
David Cadena Jr. will be remembered for his dedication to public service, his deep love for family, his amazing smile, and the lasting impression he made on everyone fortunate enough to know him. His legacy lives on through the communities he served and the many lives he touched.
