December 13, 1938 - October 19, 2025
“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” 2 Timothy 4:7
George Farias passed away on October 19, 2025 of natural causes at the age of 86. He was born on December 13, 1938, in San Antonio to Anastacio “Stacey” Farias and Isidra Martinez.
His journey on this earth was one marked by ceaseless love, devotion to family, and unwavering faith in God. George will be remembered for his gentle spirit, being a calm listener and giver of profound advice, and most of all his eternal optimism. He attended Texas A & M University in College Station and will forever be a proud Aggie. After returning to San Antonio, he met Mary Helen when both worked at a Handy Andy grocery store and later completed his bachelors and masters in business administration at St. Mary’s University. A true Renaissance man, George’s love of ideas, history, music, and film was often shared, influencing his family’s and friends’ deep appreciation of humanism and the arts.
He was former executive director of the Bexar County Mental Health Mental Retardation Center (now Center for Health Care Services) and was active in Hispanic genealogy and historical research. Among his proudest accomplishments was the publication of his book, The Farias Chronicles, in 1995 on the history of his family. Years of devoted research, began initially by his father Stacey, led George to discover the role his family’s ancestors played in the formation of Spanish Texas, generations in northern Mexico, and a lineage in Spain and earliest known origins in the Minho province of northern Portugal, near the town of Barcelos. He was incredibly proud of his ancestors’ Sephardic roots and celebrated his filial connection to both Jewish and Catholic intellectual wisdom traditions.
George is survived and missed by his loving wife of over 65 years, Mary Helen Lozano, and children, George Jr. (Susie), Michael Anthony (Maritza), Diane Elizabeth, Cynthia Grace (Brett) Bryant, Thomas Christopher (Michelle), Richard Henry (Adam) and remembered fondly by his seven grandchildren, Lauren A. and Taylor A. Bryant, Sara A. Farias, Cameron J. Farias, Kendall S. Farias, Frieda M. Farias, Thomas M. Farias, great granddaughter EmberRay Barrera, siblings Frank (Dottie), David (Lori), Marie Rollin, sister-in-law Marie, and numerous nephews, nieces, and step grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, brothers Christopher and Jose, and siblings-in-law Shirley and Michael.
He will be laid to rest in a private service at San Fernando Cemetery #2.
