I knew John through the Vietnam Veterans Program for PTSD  in Menlo Park, CA, when I was a volunteer there in 1982-3.  We became friends when, as a fledgling writer, I published a story about him in a local newspaper.  Unfortunately, I can't locate that article now.
After John graduated from the program, we continued our friendship. He moved to San Francisco, but visited me in Palo Alto every few months.  He always arrived with a few small gifts for me, and a rose. When I didn't hear from him before Xmas 2 years ago, I wrote and called him several times. Finally I discovered his obituary and this website.  I hope someone can contact me because I have some photos of John that I took through the years.  I'm sure you know he was always nattily-dressed, with a carnation in his lapel, a hat, jewelry -- the works.  Always a cigar also.
John was a really special person. I know he was devoted to his mother, and traveled to see her during the hot San Antonio summers.  He had friends in San Francisco who I never met, so I'd have to say that we weren't a big part of each others' lives, but I am very sorry he's gone.  I know i'll never meet anyone remotely like him, and his kind, gentle ways are a rarity in this world.  I loved to see him "interact" with my little dog, and many of my photos include the two of them.  Please do contact me if you see this message, and I'll send you some photos of John.

John was my classmate at Loma Park Elementary (early 50's... maybe 1st through 6th Grades). The Carranco family moved from LP shortly after. I saw John again in '68 at the Balboa US Naval Hospital in San Diego, CA where we were both patients after returning from Vietnam. I later ran into John in 1972 or 73 at Our Lady of the Lake University, but he disappeared for a while. Then I met him a final time in '74 or '75--on Houston St. in San Antonio across from the Texas Theater. I showed him my orders to the VA Hospital in Waco where I was to be treated for PTSD (called nervous condition at that time). He convinced me to not go there. I returned to my VA doctor and  was issued orders to the VA Hospital in Temple, TX instead.  John Carranco saved my life. See, I would have been involuntarily committed to the psychiatric unit for 6 months at Waco. I spent 3 weeks at Temple. I will never forget John. May he rest in peace.  Semper Fi, Brother!

To the Carranco family:  My wife Carol & I send out our thoughts and prayers to you.  I am so grateful to have met John in 1991, and have him sponsor me through the 12 steps.  He taught me Love, Patience,Tolerance and Service towards others.  He lead by example.  He told me that when you empty yourself of self, your then full of God. My cousin John was a older brother I never had. I will forever have fond memories of the times we shared. He will forever be missed by all our family. Semper Fi brother until we meet again.

John was a beautiful man in spirit and deed. He lives on in those whose lives were influenced by his shining example. It was an honor to know him and a gift from God that he came into my life, he was my friend, my mentor, and my inspiration. He is now in the loving arms of his creator, surrounded by his loved ones in heaven, at rest.
