Manuela Zapata Brown passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on Saturday, April 27, 2024. She was born in Zapata, Texas on May 5, 1934 to Rufino Zapata and Gregoria Gonzalez Zapata, one of 8 children.
Manuela graduated from Zapata High School and moved to San Antonio where she would graduate from Draughon's Business School. There Manuela met a supportive group of life-long friends including her eventual husband, Malvin Cordell Brown, and she made San Antonio her second home.
She was an early employee of KCOR, the first Mexican radio station in the United States located in San Antonio, where she did various jobs from traffic scheduling, modeling, commercials and accounting. She worked in the radio industry all of her career, stations including KCOR, KITE, KEXL, KROM, KQXT, and several Univision stations, and was a member of American Women in Radio and Television. She would receive the Service Award from Univision having worked in radio for more than 50 years.
Manuela was a devout Catholic and was a member of Our Lady of Grace Parish. She enjoyed gardening and traveling, but most importantly she loved spending time with her family. Her loved ones considered her an eternal caregiver. She had a big heart and would provide support where and whenever she could.
Manuela will be united in heaven with her husband of 57 years Malvin Cordell Brown; her siblings, parents, and grandparents. Her memory will forever live in the hearts of her children Pamelyn Brown Mathis (Husband John Mathis), Phillip Malvin Brown, and Patricia Brown Nicoll (Husband Raoul Nicoll); grandchildren Gregory Barrett, April Barrett Jackson (husband Charles Jackson), Aimee Brown, Jared Brown, and Marinna Nicoll, and great grandchildren Charity Jackson and Harmony Jackson.
Manuela will be dearly missed by those who knew her.
A visitation for Manuela will be held Saturday, May 4, 2024 from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Funeraria Del Angel Roy Akers, 515 North Main Ave, San Antonio, TX 78205. A rosary will occur Saturday, May 4, 2024 from 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM, 515 North Main Ave, San Antonio, TX 78205. A reception for Manuela will be held on Sunday, May 5, 2024 from 8:30 AM to 9:30 AM at Roy Akers Funeral Home. A chapel service will will follow from 9:30 AM to 10:00 AM, 515 North Main Ave, San Antonio, TX 78205. A graveside service will occur Sunday, May 5, 2024 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at First Memorial Park Cemetery, 20567 TX-16, Von Ormy, TX 78073.
