Margaret Clarada Harmon Thomas Currie, beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great-great grandmother, peacefully joined her Heavenly Father on April 29, 2014 at 90 years of age. She was born in Washington D.C. on December 16, 1923 to John W. and Lilly B. Harmon and was the fifth of six children. She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Robert, and John; her sisters, Sacajawea, Ruth Walker, and Pocahontas Sewell and her husbands, Benjamin Thomas and Grammer Lee Currie. She leaves to cherish her beautiful memory her children; Pocahontas Corbett and husband Richard, Wyniaco Thomas and wife Maria, Margaret C. Pearson and husband Henry, Josephine Crespo and husband Pete. Her legacy will live on through her 9 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, 5 great-great grandchildren as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and loved ones. She grew up working in her parent’s grocery store, and attended the Church of God regularly. She graduated from Dunbar High School in Washington, D.C. and later went on to work for The Library of Congress, specializing in typing Russian, becoming proficient in shorthand. Margaret was also highly attuned to her Native American heritage, and was a proud, registered member of the Nanticoke tribe in Delaware. Margaret enjoyed music, especially the “Big Band Era.” Her favorite activities included bowling, skating, traveling, and walking. She would walk 20 blocks just to visit a friend, and that was just a warm up. She left an imprint of love and joy on every heart she encountered; once you met her, she wasn’t easily forgotten. She could see our beauty when we were most tattered and torn.
Some of her favorite quotes include:
“Don’t take shortcuts; you may be taking a short cut through your life.”
“Make sure you have on clean underwear, in case you get hit by a car”
“If life gives you just one good friend, you have been truly blessed”
“Give me my flowers while I am alive”
The flowers in her arrangements are still blooming; she was one of life’s true gardeners. She had a very happy inner spirit and had no problem finding happiness. Happiness, to her, was not defined by material things, social status, or any other modern day definition of happiness. She was truly at peace with herself in God; her inner calm allowed her to overcome all of life’s every day obstacles, and she offered this inner calm to others. Her strength was in understanding that life was what you made of it, and without family and friends life has no value. These God given values were applied to her struggles in life. Happiness to her life was as simple as an ice cream cone, or a bag of popcorn.
A quote from a Letter she wrote Cheryl:
“You can always call me late at night or early in the Morning during the day I am gone unless I am sick.”
Margaret is now at home and to see her you will have to visit her on the other side.
One of her favorite poems reads as follows:
Do all the good you can
By all the means you can
In all the ways you
In all the places you can
At all the times you can
To all the people you can
As long as ever you can
