

Robert Guerrero Gamez (Bobby), 92, passed away on Thursday, December 11, 2025. Born in San Antonio, Texas on December 26, 1932, he was predeceased by his parents, Roberto Rudolfo Gamez and Dolores Guerrero.
A graduate of Lanier High School in 1952, Bobby was a Freshman Guard on the basketball team, where he helped lead them to the City Championship Title.
After graduating, Bobby, at 19, enlisted in the United States Marines Corps and served in Fox Company, 2nd Battalion, rising to the rank of Sergeant. His first assignment took him to Korea, where he was appointed Scout. On one particularly difficult night mission, he lost his direction and unexpectedly came in close proximity to a group of enemy fighters. He was able to regain his bearings and returned to base camp to report their location- an experience that led to him to Scout Leader.
In 1953, he was sent out to retrieve the wounded during a fire fight when a mortar exploded and knocked him unconscious. He was awarded the Purple Heart.
After his honorable discharge from the Marines, Bobby worked at Kelly Air Force Base as a Sheet Metal Worker until his civilian retirement when the air force base closed in 2001.
Following his retirement, he drove a school bus for the SAISD where he connected with the special education kids also ensuring they made it to school and home safely. He retired after 10 years.
Bobby stayed connected to his community and his high school roots. As a member of the Fabulous Fifties alumni group from Lanier High School, he devoted many years to helping raise funds for athletic programs and equipment for student athletes. Later in life, he was recognized in Virginia as an encouraging and positive influence for younger generations.
Bobby was preceded in death by his wife, Mary and his five brothers and sisters, Richard, George, Tony, Gloria, and Terry. He is survived by his son, Robert, and his wife, Christina; his daughter, Lisa, and her husband, Paul; his grandchildren, Andrew, Gary, and Tara and her wife, Lisa; and his great-grandchildren, Lauren and Ryan.
Bobby will forever be missed by his many friends and family. He always approached each day with a positive attitude and a big smile! A recipe for all he encountered.
Family and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service at Roy Akers Funeral Home, 515 N. Main Ave, Wednesday, January 21st at 11:30a. Visitation with the family will begin at 11:00a.
The Committal Service to follow at Ft Sam Houston Cemetery, 1520 Harry Wurzbach Rd, at 1:30p.
