

Aileen Smith was born Edith Aileen Hawkins on July 24, 1925 to Marie and Gay Hawkins in Murphy, NC. Aileen was the oldest of eight brothers and sisters. She received a teaching degree through Mars Hill College in Mars Hill, NC. She was continuing her education at U.T. Knoxville when she met the first veteran of WWII to attend U.T. under the GI Bill. They both liked music and dancing. They were married on December 17th in 1946. Aileen and Glen Lee Smith continued to dance together for the next 65 years. They became founding members of St. John’s Methodist Church in Atlanta and enjoyed their church family. Glen preceded her in death in 2011. Aileen served her community as a teacher and later Cub Scout Leader, Girl Scout Leader, Garden Club Assoc. President, Area Fundraising Chair for various charities in Sandy Springs, GA. Together, they sent their two children (Judy Carol Smith and Glen Lee Smith Jr.) to college. Aileen and Glen enjoyed one another, One another’s families, friends and traveling. Aileen was poised, hospitable, kind and loving. She was also strong, courageous and fiercely loyal. Aileen Smith passed away on April 20, 2012 in Columbus, OH. She is survived by her two children, eight grand children and nine great grand children as well as her four sisters, Libby Beddingfield, Mary Nell Ranson, Nancy Cearley, Doris Jean Raper and brother, Charles Hawkins. We mourn her passing but, rejoice in her freedom from earthly trials. She has gone to join her husband in heaven. Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 28, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. (placed in state at 9:00 a.m.) at St. John United Methodist Church, 550 Mt. Paran Rd. Sandy Springs, GA 30327. Contributions may be made for research for the cure of Alzheimer’s at www.alz.org or 1-800-272-3900 instead of flowers. Interment will follow in Arlington Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Friday at Sandy Springs Chapel, 136 Mt. Vernon Hwy., Sandy Springs, GA. 30328
