

Herbert “Herb” Carter was born to parents Walter and Gertrude Carter on February 2, 1939 in Miami, Florida. He attended Booker T. Washington High School where he graduated in 1956 and later established an endowed scholarship fund to finance college educations for future high school graduates at his alma mater. Herb holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from Chicago State University as well as an MBA degree from Pace University. He also completed an Executive Liberal Arts Program at Colgate University and the Advanced Management Program at the University of Chicago.
Herb met his soulmate Ramona Trepagnier in Chicago, Illinois and they were married on July 18, 1960. From this union was born a son, their only child, Anthony Carter a medical doctor currently practicing in New London, CT. The couple was subsequently blessed with 55 years of marriage which was lovingly shared with their family and friends. Herb was employed with IBM for 25 years, where he held various executive level and management positions during his tenure with the company. He served as Vice President of the Northeastern Region at Rolm, the company formed by the joint venture between the Siemens Corporation and IBM. In February 1992, he was named Vice President and General Manager of the Southeastern Region’s Private Communications Group. Later, in 1995, he joined the Siemens Public Communications Group as Siemens Vice President of Sales for North America. In September 1998, when Siemens AG announced the worldwide merger of its Public and Private Communications Group, Herb accepted the lead executive position for managing, consolidating, and integrating the two U.S. companies. His love and commitment to education was fulfilled as Executive Vice President of the Siemens Foundation, a position he held from 1999-2004. The Foundation is a non-profit corporate entity created in 1998 to promote science and mathematics education in the United States. Following his retirement from Siemens, he continued his involvement in academic enrichment and student development through his participation on the Board of the Texas Mathworks Program at Texas State University. Just a few weeks prior to his death he established the Herb Carter Scholarship for African American students to attend the prestigious Mathworks Honors Summer Math Camp at Texas State University. Herb Carter transitioned from this Earth on October, 10, 2015 following a courageous 16 month battle with colon cancer. He died in the home he had built for his family in Sandy Springs, GA. Herb is survived by his beloved wife Mona, son Anthony, sister Evelyn, daughter-in-law Deborah, numerous nieces and nephews, and his grandson Camiren, who filled him with pride and joy throughout his life.
