James Corwin Cullom, aged 82 and blessed with an insatiable spirit of adventure, passed away on May 4, 2024, in the compassionate care of Northeast Georgia Hospital's Hospice, with his beloved daughter by his side. Born in Memphis, Tennessee on January 6, 1942, to Edward and Maxine (Pine) Cullom. He called Marietta, Georgia home for many years.
James had a lifelong passion for the outdoors. A proud graduate of Sandy Springs High School's class of 1961, he deepened his love for nature at Young Harris, before studying at the Forestry School in Florida. He continued to thrive in the outdoors and spent many years as a skilled heavy equipment operator in construction.
James never lost the scouting spirit of his youth, continuing to embrace marksmanship, whether he was perfecting his aim at the range or hunting in the great wild. His hobbies weren't confined to the ground; he loved everything from the thrill of fishing and the hum of motors to the sound of waves on the water.
An explorer at heart, James’ adventures ranged from the adrenaline rush of dirt biking to a mule trip into the depths of the Grand Canyon. At the young age of 21, he set sail for Venezuela, a journey cut short by a hurricane—though his spirit remained undeterred.
Left to cherish his memory are his daughter, Denise Cullom Bubniak, son-in-law Eric, and grandson Blake of Gainesville, GA; his sister Adrienne; brothers Edward and Lee; and a host of nieces, nephews, and his lifelong friend Gary Garett. He joins in peace his wife of 45 years, Beverly Cullom, who preceded him in death.
The celebration of James’s journey through life is Thursday, May 9th, at Sandy Springs Funeral Home. Let’s gather to share stories of a man who never stopped exploring the world and who taught us the value of every moment spent under the open sky.
