Walter Whiting Sr.

Walter Bernard Whiting, Sr. died October 19, 2012 in Atlanta, GA at 84 years old. He was born March 22, 1928 in Richmond, VA to Robert L. and Aurelia E. Whiting, both deceased. Bernard, as he was known to family and friends, retired from Richmond Public Schools after serving 35 years as an Art Educator and Guidance Counselor. He also worked as a Tailor, Draftsman, Carpenter and CIAA Football Official. Bernard was a lifelong member of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church of Richmond, VA and a Life Member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. He graduated from Richmond's Armstrong High ('45) and held Bachelor ('51) and Master of Science ('56) degrees in Art Education and Guidance from Virginia State College.

Bernard is the father of Walter Bernard Whiting, Jr (Shelley Woods Whiting) of Atlanta, GA and Vanessa Louise Whiting (Anthony E. Smith) of Cleveland Heights, OH. He is survived by grandchildren Taylor Alexandria Dyese Smith, Lorin Amara Smith and Anthony Edward Smith II of Cleveland Heights; his sister Francis Whiting Goodman (John) of Suisun City, CA, a niece Crystal Jay Goodman of Sacramento, CA; a grandniece Adrienne Brianna Goodman of New York, NY; an ex-wife Josephine Flood Whiting of Richmond; and a host of loving cousins, in-laws and friends. He was preceded in death by his brother Robert Winston Whiting.

Per his wishes, the body has been cremated. A memorial service will be held Saturday, November 10, 2012 at 1 PM at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church, 1720 Mechanicsville Tpke, Richmond, Virginia 23223. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church.
