John was born in San Diego, CA on June 24, 1950 to John and Virginia Serrano. He had a quiet nature and treasured solitude. The family lived in San Diego until 1961 when they moved to the San Fernando Valley. He loved baseball and while in San Diego he was a Padres fan and became a Dodger fan after the move. In addition, John enjoyed both playing and watching golf with his father John Sr. Second only to sports, he enjoyed writing and reading books. The written word captivated him and he became a high school sports writer for the school newspaper.
John attended Cal State University, Northridge and earned a Degree in English with a minor in Psychology. After graduating from college, he briefly worked as a paralegal for a legal firm then took a position as a medical transcriber. He worked in that profession for over 40 years until retirement. Throughout those years John maintained his love of books. John and his younger sister, Rose spent many hours together visiting various libraries and exploring their family history. He moved to Santa Paula in the late 1990s to assist in the care of his aging parents.
John’s wit and active mind was both enjoyable and sometimes surprising. His gentle nature was a pleasant contrast to the harshness of our society. He will be missed by his family and acquaintances.
John is predeceased by his parents, John and Virginia Serrano and older sisters, Verna Mottola and Georgia Manis. He is survived by his older sister, Edwina Ford (Tim) and Rose Chacon (Robert) along with nephews and nieces, Don Mace (Yuma, AZ), Mike Mace (Bullhead City, Nevada), Deborah Edgar (Ontario, CA), Diana Mottola (Chatsworth, CA), Bradley Tate (Tooele, Utah), Matt Tate (Reno, Nevada), Cheryl Miller (Texas), David Manis (Georgia), Peter Chacon (Watford City, No. Dakota).
Services will be held at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, Santa Paula on July 16, 2025 with the Rosary and Mass starting at 9:15 am and interment immediately following at Santa Paula Cemetery.
