He worked as an operator for many years working for various companies including Brown & Root and Yates. He loved playing pool and raced cars in his youth.
Mr. Cates was preceded in death by his parents, James Gerald Cates and Frances Ruth Maherd Cates. He is survived by his son, Bobby Gerald Cates, Jr. (Betty Garrick); granddaughters, Kayla Cates and Megan Goff (Christian); other relatives and friends.
