
Jesse Ernest Phillips, 86, passed away February 7, 2011, at his home with family at his bedside. Mr. Phillips was preceded in death by his parents, Jesse M. and Virgie Phillips; brother, John M. Phillips; and sisters, Annie Kate Martin and Margie Miller. Mr. Phillips is survived by his wife of 60 years, Betty; daughter, Deborah Partin (Gary); sons, Dennis Phillips (Kelly), Terry, and Jerry Phillips. He is also survived by brothers, Shubbie (Nita) and Henry (Delores) Phillips; seven grandchildren, Philip Stephens, Tim Phillips, Jessica Kiper, Julia Owen, Jennifer Cink, Joey Phillips, Lela Phillips; eleven great grandchildren, Austin and Cameron Stephens, Megan and Kaleb Wamble, Trinity and Jackson Phillips, Emma and Lola Owen, Maci and Kambree Kiper and Isaiah Cink; numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Mr. Phillips served with honor and distinction as a Marine in WWII from 05-31-1943 to 04-13-1946 and was on Iwo Jima from 02-19-1944 to 03-27-1944 with the 5th Marine Division. Afterwards was in Japan for six months with the 2nd Marine Division. He also was in the Alabama Air National Guard when called for active duty with the Air Force in 04-23-1951 thru 01-22-1953 in the Korean Conflict. Afterwards, he was employed with the Civil Service at Brookley Air Force Field until retirement on 07-18-1967. After his retirement from Brookley, he went into business full-time with Phillips Real Estate and Phillips Accounting and Tax Service. He was a former city councilman for the City of Chickasaw, (1964-1968) serving as chairman of Parks and Recreation for three years and chairman of Finance for one year. He was also a past president of Chickasaw Civitan and a past Lt. Governor of Alabama-West Florida Civitan International. He was also a past president of the Chickasaw Gun Club, Chickasaw Dixie Boys and past vice-president of Chickasaw Dixie Youth. Mr. Phillips has been a member of the First Baptist Church of Chickasaw for many years. He was also a member of the Chickasaw Masonic Lodge 894 F&AM and the Order of the Eastern Star #139. Funeral services will be Friday, February 11, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. from the chapel of Radney Funeral Home in Saraland. Visitation will be from noon until service time at the funeral home. Interment will be in Mobile Memorial Gardens.
