

Freda Gates Armistead Dillon – a 100 year-old native of Fulton, Alabama and longtime resident of Saraland passed away Tuesday, November 2, 2016. Affectionately known as “Mama Freda,” she was described by all who knew her as an “Angel on Earth.” A wonderful cook, her fried chicken and collard greens will be missed. She retired from the City of Saraland after 16 years of service. She was also a longtime member of Bayou Sara Baptist Church where she had the distinction of being the oldest member of the congregation.
“Mama Freda” was preceded in death by her first husband, Oscar Grey Armistead; second husband, Sam Dillon; children, Willie Grey Mills, Charles Chris Armistead, and Linda Hudson Holzapfel; grandson, Lee Mills; and great-grandson, Adam Paul “Kip” Williams. She is survived by seven grandchildren, Debbie Keating (Michael), Alan Mills (Freda), Cindy Williams (Paul), Mark Mills (Jill), Beverly Youssef (Essam), Eric Hudson (Carolyn), and Kristen Abercrombie (Wayne); brother, Massie Gates; 14 grandchildren; many great, great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held from the chapel of Radney Funeral Home in Saraland on Saturday, November 5, 2016, at 9 a.m. with Rev. Dennis Dunn officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday, November 4, from 5-8 p.m. Interment will be in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens.
