Alan Michael Dattner, MD, age 79, died unexpectedly on November 29, 2023. A widely-published dermatologist and medical researcher who pioneered the field of Holistic Dermatology, many of Alan’s groundbreaking approaches appear in his book Radiant Skin From the Inside Out: The Holistic Dermatologist’s Guide to Healing Your Skin Naturally. He interwove his knowledge of nutrition, herbal medicine, Applied Kinesiology, dermatology, and Western Medicine, helping many who were desperate for answers to their issues. As a research scientist studying tumor immunology at the National Institutes of Health in the 1970's, his experiments produced foundational breakthroughs in the understanding of cross-reactivity and auto-immune disease. He attended the University of Rochester for three years, then earned his medical degree from the New York University School of Medicine, and his Dermatology Residency was at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.
Dr. Dattner passionately loved his family--his wife Rabbi Dr. Shohama Harris Wiener and daughter Alicia Dattner, and his step-children and their children. They loved to go sailing and kayaking with him. Some would make wire art with him, as he was an accomplished artist innovating engaging approaches to wire sculpture. He loved music, playing harmonica with bands famous as well as regional, and Alan fascinated onlookers with his ecstatic form of high-energy dancing. Connecting with people was easy for him, as loved to play, had a fantastic sense of humor, and was always ready with an improvised joke to make people laugh.
Alan Michael Dattner, son of Dr. Harold and Ruth Racusin Dattner is also survived by his brother Robert and nephew Antonio Dattner. The family requests donations be made to his special interest, care for the environment, any organization of your choice.
A graveside service for Alan will be held Sunday, December 3, 2023 at 2:00 PM at Temple Beth Sholom Cemetery, 801 Circus Blvd, Sarasota, Sarasota, FL 34232.
