

Dr. Alan Shuman, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and esteemed member of the Sarasota community, passed away peacefully at HarborChase Senior Living on January 2, 2025. He was 95 years old. Dr. Shuman was the son of the late Harry and Brandyl Shuman and the cherished husband of his late wife, Bernice (Bunny) Shuman, with whom he shared 69 years of love and partnership.
Dr. Shuman is survived by five devoted children: Lou and his wife Stephanie of Upperville, VA; Brian and his wife Cindy of South Burlington, VT; Jody and her husband Steven of Boston, MA; Richard and his wife Elie of East Longmeadow, MA; and Jeff and Faye Miller of Newfields, NH. He also leaves behind seven cherished grandchildren. He was predeceased by his sister, Audrey.
A proud and lifelong learner, Alan earned his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Massachusetts, financing his education by washing dishes and winning poker games. He went on to earn his Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) degree from Tufts University in 1955. That same year, he served as a Captain in the U.S. Air Force. In 1963, he completed a Certificate in Periodontology at the Boston
University School of Graduate Dentistry.
Alan spent over 50 years as a periodontist, joining Dr. Henry Goldman’s periodontal practice in Brookline, MA, where he became a trusted and respected figure in the dental community. His dedication to patient care and education was evident in every aspect of his career. A leader in his field, Alan served as President of the Brookline Dental Society, Greater Boston Dental Society, and Metropolitan Dental Society. He was also inducted as a Fellow of both the American and International Colleges of Dentistry and the Robert Andrews Honor Society.
In addition to his clinical work, Alan authored multiple journal articles and published Atlas of Periodontal Therapy in 1982, which became a key reference for professionals in the field. His influence reached far beyond his practice as he became an international educator, sharing his knowledge and expertise with dental professionals worldwide.
Alan was also a man of many passions. He was an accomplished painter, an avid golfer, and a passionate fly fisherman. His storytelling was legendary, and he had a unique ability to captivate his audience with warmth, humor, and insight. His sparkling blue eyes, radiant smile, and kind presence left a lasting impression on all who knew him.
A remembrance service for family and friends will be held on Monday, January 13, 2024 at 10:00 am at Sarasota National Cemetery.
