

Alger Zapf, Jr. died on Friday, July 22, 2011, at his home in Sarasota, Florida. He was born on August 5, 2011, in Royal Oak, Michigan. He grew up in Royal Oak, attended Dondero High School, and then enlisted in the Army during World War II. His training took him to Western Maryland College (now McDaniel College) in Westminster, Maryland. While there, he met his future wife, Frances Virginia Wahmann of Baltimore, Maryland. He shipped out to Europe and served as a medic attached to an artillery unit and was in the Battle of the Bulge and the campaign into Germany. Following discharge from the Army, he married and graduated from Loyola College in Baltimore with a degree in Business Administration. He joined his wife’s family’s business, The George H. Wahmann Manufacturing Company, and worked there throughout his career. During these years he guided the company from producing sheet metal bakery products into the fabrication of veterinary
laboratory equipment. The company was sold in 1973, and he retired with his wife to Florida.
During his retirement he enjoyed art and wood working. He carved models of wildlife and duck decoys, always continuing his quest for more realistic representations. He enjoyed theater throughout his life and regularly attended performances in Sarasota. He was active in philanthropic activities before and after retirement. He was President of the Patron’s Club of McDonogh School in Baltimore and the Gulf Coast Carving Club in Sarasota. He was an active contributer to the Players Theatre and to other Sarasota theatre groups. And he was a benfactor to the Boys and Girls Club of Sarasota.
A memorial Service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, July 30, 2011 at Beneva Christian Church.
