Arthur Dennis, the sixth child of the late Mr. Hershel and Mrs. Ernestine Dennis, was born on May 25, 1947 in Charleston, South Carolina. After his mother, Ernestine, passed, he was graciously looked after by his older sisters, Gladys, Ernestine, and Mattie, and as a child, he developed a passion for caring for others through his faith in Christ. When he wasn’t helping around the house, he loved spending time with his brothers, Alfred, Moses, and Hershel Jr. “Dino” at his father’s night club.
He continued his passion for caring for others at Savannah State College (now University) where he proudly graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry. No matter the profession, he brought kindness, compassion, and laughter to every single job he had. Over the years, he worked as a chemist, a contractor, a vitamin salesman, but his passion was always teaching. Over the course of his life, he taught in numerous schools throughout Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina. In every school and at every grade level, he was always beloved by the students and known for his good humor and the extra candy at his desk.
While teaching, he never minded spending extra time to help someone grasp a difficult concept, and he loved finding any way to make a game out of schoolwork and to make learning fun. He used every opportunity he had to teach, even while at the grocery store and or going to dinner, and he never missed a chance to teach someone something new and to make a life-long friend.
As much as he loved teaching, no job or task was more important than family. After college, he was blessed with three children: Vonna, Jabar, and Auturo. And then blessed again when he married the love of his life Dottie Brown on November 7, 1977, and they shared two children, George “Toneye” Brown and April Brown. After his retirement, he treasured being a full-time father and grandfather, known for teaching multiplication over breakfast and for having faith that all problems could be solved through prayer.
Throughout his life, Arthur was a faithful servant of the Lord, and was proud to share his faith with his friends and family. Over the years, he hosted several Bible Study groups and was a devoted member of the Knights of Columbus in Fort Myers, FL. For the last several years, he has been a valued member of the Church of the Resurrection of Our Lord.
As he entered the last phase of his life, he was deeply grateful to be cared for by his daughter, April Brown and granddaughter, Dhyana Taylor, during his transition to be with the Lord. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernestine and Hershel Sr.; his sisters: Glady Greaves, Ernestine DeForeste, and Mattie V. Dickerson; and his brothers: Alfred, Moses, and Hershel “Dino” Dennis Jr.
Arthur brought light and joy into every room he entered, and his presence touched all that he happened upon. He leaves to mourn his passing, his devoted wife, Dottie Brown; sons, Jabar Dennis, Auturo Dennis (Alfreda), and George “Toneye” Brown (Charlene); daughters, Vonna Jordan (Tony), and April Brown (Jean-Paul); along with a host of nieces, nephews, fourteen grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and his siblings-in-law, Major Dickerson and Pat Dennis, who will hold his memory close in their hearts.
