

Born on February 13, 1947, in Brooklyn, New York, to Norman and Shirley Gorn, Barry proudly served his country in the US Navy. He often told stories of his time traveling the world as a sonar-man aboard the USS Joseph P. Kennedy Jr., a Gearing-class destroyer. His unwavering commitment to his nation was matched by his unwavering devotion to his Jewish faith. An active member of the Chabad of Sarasota community, Barry’s faith was a cornerstone of his life.
He always had a profound connection to the power and beauty of the ocean and a great love of sailing and sailboat racing. He taught his children how to sail and they spent many weekends aboard their sailboat “Virtue.”
Barry was a man of many talents. An avid photographer with a keen eye for capturing the movement and rhythm of life’s moments, he was also a gifted singer and guitar and blues harmonica player. He loved comedy of Mel Brooks.
Surviving Barry are his son David Gorn and his daughter-in-law Sheree Shu of Marina del Rey, California; his daughter Jennifer Gorn Bendele and her husband Vence Bendele of Austin, Texas; his sister Jill Miller and his nephew David Miller. His sister Jill provided comfort and support throughout his illness, sitting by his side through his final days.
Barry will be deeply missed and forever remembered for his creative spirit, his unwavering faith, and his remarkable sense of humor.
A graveside service will be held at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, December 11th, 2024 at Sarasota National Cemetery, 9810 State Road 72, Sarasota, FL 34241.
