While flying here, I thought of some memories.
She came and visited us in Salt Lake City since I was 13, so for 15 or so years, she would come and visited us and spent three or four months in SLC with us.  She was super fun.  What we would do, there was a little burger joint a block or 2 away, called Artic Circle.  We would sneak out, go there and get ice cream sandwiches, they were for a quarter.  We would go there and get our sandwiches, walk home, and the evidence would be gone and my Mom would not know.  Also, there was a discount bread store, and you know Grandma loved anything that was a bargain.  We would go there and get so many treats that were on sale.  We would share these.  There was also a bowling alley, 3 blocks from our house.  We would go there lots of Sunday's or discount days.  We would bowl there a lot.

Something that is really dear to me is her example of being so faithful and so Christ like.  Knowing the difference between good and bad.  She wouldn't preach it, but she taught it by example.  I think that was something that was so strong to me.  She was kind of old fashioned and we would tease her about that.  And I find myself becoming more like that now, and I can appreciate that.  I appreciate her courage in standing up to her grandchildren who poked fun at her for being old fashioned.  She had the courage to stand up for what she believed was right.  I think that was something that really sticks out to me.  I am grateful that I know she is with her husband again and what a great reunion that probably was when she saw him.  I am grateful that I will see her again.

Whenever we spent the night at Grandma's, she always made us do bed exercises before we went to bed.

Three memories that I will never forget, one growing up in Florida, we moved to Salt Lake City when I was 13.  We played baseball in Grandma's front lawn and third base was right in front of her door almost.  I remember often times I was right handed I would hit it that way.  I don't know how I didn't break a window, but she was always very patient and coming out, reminding us to be careful while playing baseball in her front lawn.

I think she probably, at her home in Sarasota, had one of the only palm trees without branches.  I would love grabbing and swinging around the tree until it broke off.  Then grab on the other and swing around the tree, so the tree didn't have any branches.

Finally, on one of her trips to Utah, it was always great to see her out in Utah.  I don't think she knew this or probably she wouldn't have done it.  You may have seen the picture of her on the motorcycle.  That was me.   That was my first motorcycle and probably one of my first weeks in owning it.  And she was brave enough to get on the back.  It all turned out okay, obviously.  But I was impressed that she wanted to do it and she got on the back of the motorcycle and we went for a ride around the house.
She was a very fun Grandma to have and I will always remember her.

The image I will forever have in my mind of grandma is with her orange life preserver on every time we went out in the pontoon boat, watching over all the kids like a hawk to make sure they were safe.  I never heard a negative word said about grandma, and never heard her say a bad thing about anyone else...I know that my brother and I must have frustrated her at times, like when we came home to her house covered in black  from playing in the sticky tar when they were building the Slurrystore.  But she just helped us clean up.  :)  I have fond memories of her johnny cake breakfasts, and the abundant sandwiches she would make us for traveling--usually summer sausage with butter on the bread.  I am sure I still have a couple pairs of her famous mittens, and treasure the quilts she put her heart into making.  She is credited with teaching me to crochet and cross-stitch--and didn't laugh too hard when she had to help me undo an entire cross-stitch that I had sewn to my skirt.  I was so focused I hadn't realized what I had done until it was far too late.

She always sweetly closed her letters and cards with "Jesus loves you, and so do I."  She was so strong in her faith, and I know she is elated to be reunited with grandpa and dad.  I can almost see her grinning, with a twinkle in her eye.

Jesus loves you, Grandma...and so do I.

Mom, I will miss you so.  The memories of the summers you spent here are numerous, we had such fun.  You were up for anything, always ready to go out, visit family, or friends.  We had fun with my co-workers that came every week to play canasta,  The bridesmaid dresses we made one summer kept us busy, but they were beautiful.  The last few summers that you couldn't come out, you were missed by us all. I love you.

We will always remember Bertha for her kindness and gentle nature.  We feel fortunate to have been a part of her life.  Sincere sympathy to your entire family.

Of course my earliest memory of "Mom Roes" was how welcome she made me feel upon my first visit to Lowville. Cherie and I weren't married at that point and yet she made me feel right at home and part of the family.  That warmth continued later in life as I looked forward to her yearly summer visits to Salt Lake City. It was always a pleasure to hear her stories of early family life in Up-State New York and how her and "Dad Roes" established their dairy farm. I was so impressed with all the beautiful needle work items she hand made and will cherish those she shared with me. And in closing, if you were playing cards with "Mom Roes", don't ever think about winning a hand of euker.
