I met Carol when she was my husband’s colleague at West Ottawa Middle School, when he was the new assistant principal in 1977. She was living in a ranch home on Lake Forest Drive and for the evening’s entertainment, she hosted a fondue party. Years later, I became her colleague for two years as 6th grade ELA teacher, and we had a foldable wall and door between our classrooms. We had two very different approaches and teaching styles, and as she observed my writing workshop and I, her presentations, I think we agreed that each of us brought something positive to the curriculum. The thing we had most in common was the amount of hours we put into our work. We each arrived at the last minute of required pre teaching time, our arms laden with student work that we had dragged home the evening prior, after having stuck around school until nearly 6pm. The English paper work load was heavy, and we each burned the candle on both ends. Often times  during our long after school time, we would take breaks to check on each other and discuss classroom issues before going back to our tasks.  I actually thought that one day,  one of us would find the other asleep at a teacher desk, with a weary head plopped upon a pile of papers. 
 During her last year at WO, the teachers work room had been remodeled, and the mailboxes rearranged.
Carol’s mailbox was suddenly too high for her to reach because the name Botts appeared at the top of the alphabet, and Ms. Botts was quite short. She lodged her concern, but the problem was not solved as quickly as she wanted, so Carol took matters into her own hands, moved a few things around, created her own label “Wellington-Botts” , and her mailbox was suddenly at the bottom.
 She was definitely a unique, unforgettable woman. I send my deepest condolences to all the loved ones and friends on the loss of Carol. Ron, you will miss her so much.  It was wonderful that you had that special love.

Ron, I am so sorry for your loss. It’s hard to imagine no pictures of Carol and you , dressed in  similar colored attire, sitting at a table laden with food, at a classy restaurant on FB. My prayers will be with you that God gives you strength to face the future without Carol.

Ron, I am so sorry for your loss.  I worked with Carol at WO.  I so enjoyed her posts on Facebook, her outfits, and also how she would describe her restaurant  meals!

We all will miss Carol and all her outfits, costumes, restaurant reviews, and all her stories of being a teacher and all her travels. She was so much fun at Bunco, she was always winning. I sure will miss her so much!

I am in shock at Carols passing  We were best friends all through grade school and high school.  She was my maid  of honor but we had drifted apart.  I still loved her and am so sorry Ron  my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family

Mrs. Botts was my 6th grade Language Arts teacher at West Ottawa Middle School in the 1990s. She made a lasting impression on the way I write, even to this day! She was a challenging yet loving teacher who had a zest for life! I also enjoyed seeing her outfits everyday! 
She found me on facebook 30 years later ❤️. What a special legacy she left on all of her students. My deepest condolences go to her family.

Carol was my “big sister”! We are both very petite like our mother; hence, I always joked with her when I became a teenager and grew a little taller that she was no longer “bigger” than me. 

She was 6 1/2 years older than me and went away to Michigan State University when she was 18 and I was just 11. Moreover, we shared our love and excitement for MSU as I also graduated from there. One summer while at MSU working Carol came to attend summer school and requested me to be her subject for her IQ tests she was learning to administer. It was an interesting experience. 

Also, we shared our love for our country and interest in politics that our parents encouraged. Our family has a long history in the United States going back to the 1600’s. 

Carol’s passing came as a huge shock Tuesday morning when Ron notified me.  I am heartbroken in many ways. 

My prayers are for Ron, who was her husband and best friend. They shared a special relationship. I pray for him as he navigates the sudden loss of his Princess. Prayers for all who grieve her loss.

Ron. I am devastated at the news of Carols passing. We worked together at WO  middle school. I so enjoyed  all her interesting posts. She will be greatly missed.

This is Carol with her mother (left) and my mother (right) at my mom’s flat in Chicago, her Aunt Grace, when she was very young.  Carol was 7 years older than me and I wasn’t even a twinkle in anyone’s eye at this point.  They all lived in Chicago then, and even after moving to Michigan, Carol’s family came several times a year to Chicago to visit and we’d go to Grand Rapids as well.  And we’d meet in the summer at a cottage somewhere.  Many childhood memories with Carol!  Sadly I moved to Europe almost 30 years ago, so I haven’t seen Carol since the early 1990’s.  I followed her on Facebook and loved all her restaurant reviews.  I am sure she will be greatly missed by all her friends and most especially by Ron, who was absolutely her soulmate.
