Curtis J. Timm, passed peacefully in Sarasota on July 26, 2023, at the age of 94. He was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the son of Charles E. and Edna O. Timm. He developed his lifelong work ethic starting at an early age as a caddy at Interlachen Country Club when he was 10. At 12, he built his own motor scooter. At 16, he was a successful Fuller Brush salesman. He graduated from Southwest High School in Minneapolis where he lettered in 3 sports. As his entrepreneurial roots grew during his senior year, he put on off campus dances for his peers.
He attended Hamline Methodist College for two years with a year in between in construction. He then went to the University of Minnesota for his undergraduate and Law degree. While there he joined Psi Upsilon Fraternity serving as house manager during law school for room and board. His 6-year painting business paid for his schooling.
In 1954 he married Joan E. Witte, took the bar exam and joined the Air Force. He was stationed at Dover AFB serving as a J.A.G. Officer. After the service, he worked at the Minneapolis law firm, Wheeler and Fredrikson.
Moving to Sarasota in 1958, he became a partner at Icard, Merrill, Cullis, & Timm P.A. In 1959, he and his wife helped establish Church of the Palms where he served as President, an elder, on building campaigns and started the church’s Foundation. He also attended First Presbyterian Church in Highlands, N.C. and was part of the hospital foundation there.
Curt was on the committee that built the Ram Bowl Stadium at Riverview H.S. He is also credited with getting the 6 3/4 miles of Bee Ridge Extension paved. With his love of the oil business, he formed Tatco Drilling Partnerships and later Curtis J. Timm Corp. for which he had his N.A. S. D. license. He was a founding board member of Sun Hydraulics. He was a Shriner, a Free Mason, a private pilot, and a Chevalier du Tastevin. Curt adored family ski trips and playing golf. He was a member of Sara Bay C.C. and Gator Creek Golf Club, Inc. locally and Highlands C. C. in N.C. He was a past President at Gator and part of its formation. He was club champion at every club he belonged to and had over 20 holes in one.
He was such a treasure. A finer man with integrity never lived. After surviving a direct hit by lightning in 1962, he was not afraid to die and was a firm believer in eternal life. He is preceded in death by his wife Joan of 66 years, & his brother, Robert. Left to cherish his memory are his kids, Doug Timm (Susan), John Timm (Marsha) and Patricia Wilson, all of Sarasota. Curt is survived by five grandchildren: Brian Timm (Anne Marie), Matthew Wilson (Jamie), Katy Timm, Lauren Wilson, and Joanna Fonner (Mike); and four great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at Church of the Palms, 3224 Bee Ridge Road, Sarasota, FL 34239 on Friday, August 18, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to: Church of the Palms or First Presbyterian Church of Highlands, P.
