Don was born September 12,1942 in Pear Ridge, Texas to his loving parents, Lester and Gracie Roberts. He was one of six children including Curtis (Gail), Lester (Dolores), Barbara (Michael), Sandy, (Charles), and Larry (Diana).
He raised two beautiful sons, Dallas and Brian, and welcomed with joy their loves, Christine and Therese. His four grandchildren, Devon, Jada, Pilot, and Ever and their partners added perfection to his life. Better known to them as Gpa, he loved his grandchildren’s mantra: Never trust Grandpa! Many other young people felt lucky to have their “Uncle Don” in their lives.
He fell in love on Lido Beach with his best friend, Peggy, and they lived the happiest and most joyful life together; sharing a passion for caring about and standing up for others who were less fortunate, lovers of world peace and harmony, travel adventures, family, and friends.
Everyone who knew Don would describe him as bigger than life, always positive and available to others, and the most non-judgement person who ever walked the earth. His entire life, he stood up for “the least of these my brethren”. He earned the right to be proud of his education as a graduate of Duke University’s Divinity School, a United Methodist minister in The Texas Annual Conference, and as the President and CEO of Goodwill Industries-Manasota. In 2012, he retired hoping that the people he had served felt genuinely blessed by his leadership and care and guidance.
On May 15, 2025, he left earth like he lived his life; with grace and peace and making sure that those of us who loved him knew how much he loved and cherished all of us. He believed that there was something glorious after his earthly life and that his Christian faith would surely take him home. Those of us who were so lucky to know and experience his love will never forget him. As he said he was taking part of our hearts with him, and he was leaving part of his heart with us.
Don asked that we celebrate his life together at First United Methodist Church in Sarasota on June 9, 2025 at 11AM. Robert Toale and Sons and Don’s minister, Brett DeHart, and church team are creating a beautiful service. The family thanks each of them for their care and support. The church will livestream the service for those who cannot attend in person at www.facebook.com/fumcsarasota or the “Live” section of www.SRQworship.com.
