Frederick V. Behrends, 94, died on March 30, 2021 at his home in Sarasota, FL after being weakened by the 2nd COVID-19 vaccine.
Fred was born and raised in New York City. He was a graduate of New York State Maritime Academy and Fordham University and served as an officer in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific during the Korean War.
He joined the FBI in 1947 as a clerk in NYC, where he met his wife-to-be Doris Boland. After serving in the Navy and graduating from Fordham, he completed New Agents Training in 1956.
Fred served in the Omaha, Portland, Washington Field Office and New York Divisions, in both criminal and foreign counterintelligence divisions.
After retirement from the FBI in 1978, Fred was employed as a staff supervisor for the Motion Picture Association of America in NYC.
Fred raised his family in Westwood, NJ. His wife, Doris, predeceased him in 2016. Fred is survived by daughters Mary Jane Behrends Clark of Hillsdale, NJ and Margaret Ann Behrends of Sarasota, FL and grandchildren Elizabeth Higgins Clark (Lauren Pomerantz) of Los Angeles, CA and David Frederick Clark. He was predeceased by his identical twin William T. Behrends and stepbrother Edward P. Lyons.
Fred was a force of nature and made an impact on everyone he met. He loved his family, his country, the FBI, a rousing debate, his 5 o’clock Scotch, telling stories about his cases and asking people about themselves. He was a faithful Catholic and a proud New Yorker.
