
Dr. Gary Wayne Androphy, an orthopedic surgeon and lawyer, passed away at the age of 72 on April 28, 2023, in Sarasota, Florida. He was a self-motivated, curious, and well-read individual who possessed a unique blend of skills. Dr. Androphy was born on May 13, 1950. He was predeceased by his father, Leonard Androphy, and mother, Asnah Androphy. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from Brown University and went on to complete his M.D. from the University of Connecticut School of Medicine, and his J.D. from Northwestern School of Law.
Dr. Androphy, for several years, practiced orthopedic surgery in Derby, Connecticut. A skilled surgeon, inventor, he was not only able to patent a groundbreaking triplanar knee system device, a pioneering tool that led to the development of modern knee replacements providing patients with more mobility and reduced pain., but also to enforce those patents against some of the world's largest medical device manufacturers.
He was also enthusiastic about theater, films and was a passionate travel photographer. Dr. Androphy had a keen interest in collecting world-class vintage posters, historical memorabilia, Old Florida postcards and fountain pens.
Dr. Androphy is survived by his cherished wife, Karen, and two brothers, Joel (Sheryl) and Jay (Robin), nieces, nephews, and cousins. His memorial service will be held at Temple Emanu-EL on Monday, May 8th. Contributions can be made to All Faiths Food Bank at www.allfaithfoodbank.org.
Dr Androphy's legacy will live on through his contributions to the medical field and his passion for photography, the arts and collecting. He will be dearly missed by his family, friends, and colleagues.
