She was born on June 14, 1933, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to the late Bill and LaRue Mathies. She is a graduate of Pittsburgh High School.
Joan worked tirelessly alongside her husband, Allen, in business endeavors and later in life had her own business, Joann’s Jewelry. Additionally, she served on the Board of Directors for several organizations in Illinois, including North Shore Country Day School, Northbrook Woman’s Club, Barrington Woman’s Club, and the Welcome Club of Long Grove.
Joan enjoyed trips to Las Vegas, playing cards—especially poker and bridge—and dining out with family and friends. Above all, she cherished her time with her grandchildren, who were the apple of her eye and with whom she shared a close and loving bond.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 64 years, Allen Rickel; her siblings, Bill Mathies, Jim Mathies, and Carol Ludwick.
Joan is survived by her children, Allen Rickel, and Cheryl Franko (Garry), and her adored grandchildren, Connor, Killian, Clare, and Trevor.
