

John Edward Cannon, 95, of Osprey, FL, formerly of Jackson, Michigan died on July 10, 2023. He was born in the Bronx, New York on January 29, 1928, to John Cornelius Cannon and Marion Fette Cannon who preceded him.
John resided in Laurelton, N.Y. until he joined the US Navy in 1946 and served aboard the USS Mississippi as an ETM/2. He then graduated from Purdue University in 1951 with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering. John was later recalled to the US Navy during the Korean Conflict. In 1953, John joined Westinghouse Electric where he worked for the next 36 years. In 1990, he retired and formed his own company specializing in consulting and sales work.
While working in St. Louis, Missouri, he met and married Nellie Dossett of Waverly, Illinois in 1956. They had three children, John (Phillipa) Cannon, Craig (Claire) Cannon and Elizabeth Cooley; six grandchildren, Justin (Sarah) Cooley, Jonathan (Whitney) Cooley, Rachel Cannon, John (Samantha) Cannon, Ryan Cannon and Alexis Cannon; and three great grandchildren, Owen Cooley, Reid Cooley and Addison Cooley. John is also survived by his sister, Margaretta Brandt.
John was a member of the Church of the Palms, Sarasota, and a member of the Presbyterian Church wherever he resided, serving as a Deacon and Elder. He also spent his retirement years volunteering at Foote Hospital in Jackson, MI, Doctor’s Hospital in Sarasota, Florida and Historic Spanish Point in Osprey, FL.
Golf was one of his favorite hobbies throughout his life. He was a member of Arbor Hills Golf and Country Club in Jackson, Michigan and Sunrise Golf Club in Sarasota, Florida. He was an avid stamp collector and enjoyed pheasant hunting in Michigan, where he trained and raised Irish Setters to participate in field trials.
John and Nellie liked to travel and spent memorable times with their children camping throughout the United States, visiting all fifty states. As empty nesters, they traveled the world, including all continents except Antarctica.
