Karl was a loving man who cared deeply for his family, his wife Phyllis, his daughter Christina and his granddaughter Mellissa (Justin).
Karl was born Göran Karl-Åke Westlund in Borås, Sweden, to Carl and Alice Westlund. He grew up in Sweden alongside his siblings Gösta, Birgit, Anita, and Gunnar, forming strong family bonds that he maintained throughout his life. He was also a favorite uncle to many nieces and nephews in both Sweden and the United States.
Karl immigrated to the United States at the age of 21 after hearing the many stories from his father about his time in America, the wonderful opportunities available here and of course about pie. He served in both the Swedish Army and United States Army. It was a requirement of the US to be in service, which turned out to be a great requirement as he learned to downhill ski in Germany where he was stationed during the 2 years.
Karl had several great passions, as a master carpenter he loved creating, designing and building with wood. He also loved snow skiing where he became an instructor for many years in Michigan, sailing all through the lakes of Michigan and to the Bahamas, bike riding all over Sarasota and the love for his family and the many friends he made throughout the years. He could be a stubborn man, correction a Determined Man with a loving and warm heart, a calm and caring disposition.
Karl never regretted his decision to move to America and expressed later in life that he was so happy and pleased with his life. We will all miss his stories and he will be missed by all those that knew and loved him as he touched the hearts of many.
A memorial service will be held in June at the Sarasota National Cemetery, final date and time TBD.
