He was a Veteran of the USMC, and served during Vietnam. He had a variety of jobs throughout his life, including writing software for early computers, building custom cars with his son, and most recently, being the owner of Pop’s Pups pet sitting business. He truly loved caring for his animal clients the past eight years. Richard was also a member of the Newfoundland Club of Florida. His love of Newfoundland dogs began when he rescued his first Newf, Sirius Black. He also volunteered with the Florida Rescue and fostered many dogs over the years, pouring his heart into helping them overcome any issue.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents; and he is survived by his wife, Lisa Rouwenhorst; son, Brian of Sarasota, with whom he shared an especially close bond; one grandchild; one great-grandchild; and siblings, Crystal Johnson (Howard) of OR, Sharon Gartman (Richard) of IL, Rose Burt of IL, Dan Carter (Sandi) of NC, and John Carter (Shirley) of IL. He is also survived by his beloved Newfs, Sirius, Sully, and Willow.
