
Robert is survived by his devoted wife Jane (Bohon-Cox) Smith, sister Martha (Smith) Thompson, daughters Kimberly Smith with Craig Etheridge and Michele (Smith) Garbedian with husband Glen Garbedian, and son Robert J. Smith III; four cherished grandchildren Jennifer, Zachary, Melissa, and Chelsie; four great grandchildren Hailey, Hayden, Jaxton, and Van; two nephews John Thompson III and wife Jessica, James Thompson and late wife Nancy; one niece Christina Thompson; and six grand nephews and nieces Andrew, Sean, Rachel, Alexandria, Hailey and Eliana.
Robert was preceded in death by his father Robert James Smith, mother Christina (McIntyre) Smith, sister Margaret Smith, and brother-in-law John “Jack” Thompson Jr.
Robert was born in New Rochelle New York. He served in the US Air Force in 1959 – 1962 and spent 18 months at Karamursel Turkey TUSLOG DET3. He received a “Cold War” recognition certificate for services signed by Department of Defense Secretary Gates. After honorable discharge Robert moved to Baltimore Maryland where he began at the National Security Agency Fort Meade retiring after 35 year of service. While in Baltimore Robert was a dedicated father coaching the Arbutus Boys Little League, Girls Softball Team, Wynnwood Swim Team, serving as council president at Ascension Church in Halethorpe, and earning a third degree black belt in judo under sense John Anderson at the Baltimore Judo Institute. Robert retired to Sarasota Florida where he enjoyed golf, travel and watching the New York Yankees.
A Veteran’s Memorial is being planned with a reception in Sarasota Florida as well as a Catholic Mass at Ascension Church in Halethorpe Maryland at future dates.
