Daddy,

We said goodbye to you only 3 months and 13 days ago. Yesterday, we had to say an unexpected goodbye to Nico, our "crazy dog," as you so endearingly called him. I have experienced the loss of my 2 best friends now, and I am heartbroken. I hope you  are having a good time up there and that you and Nico are enjoying endless midnight snacks. Until we meet again.

Mr. Mercandetti

Mr. Mercandetti is the definition of what a true gentleman, father, family member, and friend should be. He was able to roll all these traits into one. Truly a rare feat. But then again, Mr. Mercandetti was a rare individual. Upon meeting him for the first time, I was a little timid (then again I was maybe 18/19, never met anyone's dad before, and I didn't know what to expect.) Was I ever surprised, I remember telling myself, “what a great man.” We sat down and spoke about everything. Once the topic of the New York Rangers came up, I felt an immediate bond!

I also remembered when I went over to his apartment on 19th street and 9th avenue in NYC to ask his permission to marry his daughter Roseanne. After about a half hour I ask him, and he stood up and said “NO”. I was looking for a place to hide. Then Mrs. Mercandetti repeated to him what I had asked, and he laughed and said YES. He misunderstood me the first time, I can't remember what he thought I said.

Great times on Sunday eating lunch and laughing. Always made me feel at home. I can really say it was a pleasure to meet him, and after close to 40 years I can remember numerous stories that he told me, means that he had a lasting effect on me, and they were all good.

RIP Mr. Mercandetti, your smile, sense of humor, and all around greatness will be with everyone for always.

Our Man Ron

He was named after the actor Ronald Coleman and was every bit as handsome, inside and out. 

A husband, a father, a grandfather, a brother, an uncle, a provider, a veteran, an imp, a lover of 

life, that was our man Ron, and he was more, much much more; he was his own man.

Each of us has our own little picture book of Our Man Ron in our minds. These picture books 

attest to what he has meant to each of us. Some of the pictures may be common among all of 

us such as those that depict his total devotion to his family. Other pictures will resonate with the 

family he raised such as the ones that are the very definition of his essence, for example, his 

waiting to eat till all of his children had had their fill, or his whole hearted sharing of household 

chores in an age when men would not often admit to doing any, and even his working the late 

shift after having cared for his brood during the day while mom worked the 9 to 5 shift. 

Other pictures extend to his childhood and include the wonderful Mercandetti's with whom Our 

Man Ron was sometimes known, after a heavy rain, to go rowing in the puddles of a flooded 

Bett's Avenue in the Bronx where they lived. And still other pictures fast forward to the newest 

generation and reveal how Our Man Ron loved each one of his grandchildren as if he or she 

was his only one. 

Each picture of Ron is also a testament to the many facets of his character, for along with his 

serious side came a playful side filled with delight and a touch of mischief. These pictures 

contain the famous sandwiches at midnight episodes, no one has ever or will ever again make 

such delicious ones for us, the endless cups of coffee with copious amounts of sugar, which 

lately were more like sugar-with-some-coffee rather than coffee-with-sugar, the hours of play 

- often making models, or blowing up model navy ships in the bathtub (don't tell mom), and 

the endless days in the basement building legos. There are also the pictures of his belly laugh 

when watching The Benny Hill Show or Blazing Saddles or A Funny Thing Happened On The 

Way To The Forum, we laughed till we cried. There are also pictures of Our Man Ron cheering 

or raging during Ranger hockey games, devouring banana splits, or driving cars, especially the 

Cadillac, as if he were the king of the road or a cowboy setting off into the sunset, though we all 

know he was famous for getting lost, very lost.

And then there are the best pictures, those of his love. His love for everyone in his life but most 

of all for Mary. She has been the love of his life since he was 11 years old, when he first wooed 

her with an offering of Oreo cookies. Many of us here today, children and grandchildren, are 

here because of the love that Ron and Mary had. It was a love that stood the test of time and, 

most of all, endured and even deepened these last 17 years whilst Our Man Ron met his health 

challenges one day at a time with the help of his beloved. In one of his hospital stays, the ICU 

doctor noted to mom how all of the nurses and staff were struck by the tenderness between 

them. We cherish that picture too, in some ways, most of all.

Our Man Ron, a man short in stature, but tall in what counted in life: a hello for all, a helping 

hand, never a complaint nor criticism, and love, endless quantities of love. That was Our Man 

Ron. We will miss him very much but he has enriched us and embedded himself in our hearts, 

our souls and our minds, where we will keep him ever so much alive and safe, free of suffering 

and pain, and so loved in return.

What can I say about one of my dearest friend and relative. You were one of the best people God gave to all of us who knew you. You were funny, caring and at times you just loved to give everyone a hard time, just for the sake of it.  All of us knew that if we ever needed you, you would be right there to help no matter what, we could depend on you.  For me you were the person who understood me and thought most of what I did was just fine and dandy, even if the rest of the world didn't, so I always knew I had you in my corner.  I will love and miss you always.  Say hello to everyone up there, don't give Vincent to hard of a time, but I am sure he was at the door waiting to greet you, so you and him could start a good debate about something.

Dad - I just miss you. That's all. Please keep sending me signs that you are "around." One thing I have learned through the process of grieving is that we will never be the same, since you have left us, but we are ever so much better for having had someone SO GREAT to lose. Love you, Jojo

My Beloved Father,

What can one say except. "Thank you."

Thank you for your love of me, patience with me, non-judgmental ways, acceptance even if it hurt, love of Mom, love of family, love of my wife and children, love of friends, loyalty, devotion, dedication, trueness to one's self, deciding your own course, love of games and sports especially hockey, love of building models, and love of life in good times and bad.

These attributes are just a small sampling or what you were and are for me.  You are the essence of what a Father should be.  You are the embodiment of Love.  You are the man whom I have always admired the most and hope to emulate in my role as husband, father, brother, uncle, cousin and friend. I find myself reflecting on things I do and say and I realize that the most wonderful of these things originated with you.  It is at those moments that a small smile touches my face and my heart feels glad, for it reminds me that you are not really gone, but are still with me.  Although I will miss you, you will live on in my heart, mind and soul, and in your grandchildren and beyond as they too reflect what you are. 

You touched so many people in so many ways and you did so with genuine LOVE.

P.S. You would have enjoyed the celebrations we had in your honor as we celebrated your life.  Hope you got to look in and your heart was glad.

Elaine & Family - What can we say that you haven't already heard?  We recall Ron's charm, and how much he adored Naomi & David (with emphasis on sharing the Star Wars Lego craze with David) through the various conversations we had on your Porter Place porch.  And, of course, seeing him consigned to the porch (Damn the Season!) through our windows across the street...feeling just a mite sorry as he stood out there in the freezing cold.

He was someone who knew what he wanted...no matter the consequences.

You were so fortunate to have this man in your orbit who cared so deeply for you all.  This is just one of the many things that made him a great a role model for Mary, Arie, Naomi, David & yourself.

Grandpa,

     You were, as they say, a real mensch. A man for whom "good" seems hardly an adequate description, yet who embodied that same term with every fiber of his being. 
    
     No matter what, you were always there. Whether you were driving Naomi and I to school, to dance, or to McDonalds for some forbidden french fries and fish-filets, playing unending games of Stratego or Mario with us, or patiently showing us how to build Lego set after Lego set, you were a constant source of love, joy and more than a few laughs. 
     
    Though you are no longer with us in the here and now, you will never cease to be a constant presence in our lives. For more than anything else, the love those whose lives you touched have for you, for each other, and for life itself is a testament to the pricelessness of your own life. 

     So goodbye gramps, but also thank you. Endlessly, infinitely, whole-heartedly thank you. If not for you, the world would not be half so bright.

Mary and family,
As a nurse I meet many people everyday, but none that have touched my heart the way Ron did.  I will truly miss hearing  "hey Lar".  I feel blessed to have had the privilige of being his friend and caregiver and of the closeness we all shared.
God Bless his soul, may it rest in peace and may the Lord bless and protect you all.

To my Witchiepoo,

I will forever miss you but am relieved to know that you have gone to a better place. I love you with all my heart and  I trust you aren't giving them too hard a time up there. Your family misses you but you will live on in our memories and wicked laughs you have left us with.

You were the best of men and the very best of grandfathers, I will miss our crosswords, our puzzles, our lego building but I will really miss our banter. You kept me on my toes and I kept you laughing and every minute was a treasure.
