

Thelma “Ann” Johnson (nee Gore) age 95 passed away at her home surrounded by family on July 18, 2025. She became a Sarasota, FL resident in 2015 after moving down from Waretown, NJ. Born in Newark, NJ, Ann received her BA in History from St. Lawrence University in 1951 and then worked for Cosmopolitan Magazine. After receiving her MA in Education from SUNY in 1958, she taught on a US Air Force base in Morocco. During that time she met her future husband, Alfred Johnson, in 1959. They married in the American Cathedral in Paris in 1961 before moving back to the US where they had three children: Richard (Karen), Fredrick (Pam) and Patricia Hunnewell (Tom). Ann was president of the PTA for Southdown Elementary School in Huntington, NY, and worked as a substitute teacher while residing in Sparta, NJ. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Appalachian Mountain Club. Ann was also a member of St. Wilfred Episcopal Church where she volunteered at the Food Pantry up until this year. She enjoyed traveling, sailing, and was an avid reader and puzzler.
She passed on her many passions to her three grandchildren: Kayla, Nikki and Ella Hunnewell. She is also survived by her brother, Edward Watson (Marcia) Gore, Jr.
Ann was predeceased by her husband of 59 years, Alfred Carrington Johnson, her parents, Thelma (nee Moffette) and Edward Watson Gore, and her sister Anita (nee Gore) (James) Cooley.
