Alberta J. Stanley died peacefully in her sleep on January 23rd at the Hospice of the Valley Brighton Gardens facility after a short stay. She joins her husband of 50 years, Wayne, who preceded her in death 30 years ago in 1971.
Born Alberta Josephine Ginther on March 17, 1910 in Sturgis, Michigan, Alberta and Wayne moved to Phoenix in 1950. In 1953 she and Wayne built the Stanley's Service Center on North 32nd street. She kept the books and Wayne ran the business. In 1965 their eldest son, David, took over the business that is now run by grandson Michael.
Until the very end of her life Alberta was actively involved with her family and was always a competitive match for any family member in a game of Scrabble. She not only knew the names of every grandchild (there are 31), great grandchild (60), and great great grand child (2), but could also tell you about the life of each one. Alberta and Wayne were long time members of St. Agnes Catholic church.
In March of 2010 a celebration of Alberta's 100th birthday was held in Tempe, AZ. with over 100 family members attending. Alberta truly enjoyed every minute of visiting with each and every one of her extended family as did the family members enjoy spending time with her. She loved to put a face with the names and with her remarkable memory could recall each individual from the youngest to the oldest in an instant.
Alberta is survived by her 10 children and their spouses; David and Sandy (Phoenix, AZ), Glenn and Jean (Phoenix, AZ), Roger and Charlotte (Berlin, MA), Janet and Paul Krois (Puyallup, WA), Mike and Carol (Federal Way, WA), Robert and Celia (Goleta, CA), Douglas and Mary (Mesa, AZ), Richard and Connie (Moraga, CA), Mark (Seattle, WA), Brian and Ellen (Mayer, AZ) as well as 139 (?) of their offspring.
Viewing will be held at Green Acres Mortuary on Friday, January 28th from 6:00pm till 8:00pm with rosary at 7:00pm. A memorial mass celebrating Alberta's life will be held at 9:30am on January 29, 2011 at Holy Spirit Catholic church in Tempe followed by internment next to Wayne at Green Acres cemetery. A reception will follow the internment at the Holy Spirit church activities center.
