

Janette Ellen (Hootman) Dargavel passed away on June 20, 2023 after a brief illness. Janette “Jan” was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on March 9, 1943 to Joseph R. Hootman and Eleanor (Ferrel) Hootman. Jan grew-up in Shellsburg, Iowa, the fourth child in a family of ten. Jan will be missed by her five surviving siblings, Larry Hootman, Anna Ortery, Allice Hootman, Mark Hootman and Glen Hootman. She was predeceased by four siblings, Barbara Raue, David Hootman, Kenneth Hootman and Paul Hootman. Jan lived in Shellsburg, Iowa until her senior year in high school, when the family moved to Mount Vernon, Iowa, where she graduated from Mount Vernon High School in 1961. Two weeks after graduating Jan accepted a job selling magazines door to door. This job sent her traveling around the country.
After traveling for a year Jan took a map of the United States, put it on the table, closed her eyes and pointed. Her finger landed on Denver. Jan stayed in Denver for a year. Jan left Denver and moved to Olathe, Kansas in 1963 and nine years later moved to Kansas City, KS. Jan went to work for Motorola on July 28, 1986 in Kansas City and later transferred to the Dallas, TX, where she lived until 1993. In 1993 Motorola transferred Jan to Phoenix, AZ. Soon after her arrival in Arizona purchased a home in Queen Creek, AZ. Later moving to Dreamland Villa, Mesa in late 2004. Jan retired from Motorola in 2012. In April 2015 while square dancing Jan met Jim Dargavel. They were married on June 23, 2018 residing in a newly purchased home in Dreamland Villa.
Jan attended Calvary Chapel Tri-City for nearly 20 years and was a member of Laureate Sigma Mesa, a Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi for nearly 20 years holding numerous offices including President of the club for three years.
Jan always enjoyed travelling, travelling to many countries around the world. Jan believed travelling to Israel brought her closer to God. Jan’s other interests included gardening, where she grew most of her own vegetables, volunteering at Sunshine Acres, hiking, square dancing and playing cards.
She will be missed by everyone who knew her.
A Memorial Service honoring her life will be held on October 21, 2023, 10:30 am, Calvary Chapel of Tri-City, 2334 E. Southern Ave., Tempe, AZ 85282.
