Scott, who we affectionately called “Scotty,” was born May 8,1986 to Thomas and Vicky Altemus. He was a precious child who grew into a kind, considerate, and loving young man. He graduated from Corona Del Sol High School and went on to complete an Associate of Arts degree at Mesa Community College. Sadly, his educational pursuits were interrupted when he was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor at the young age of 19. His life expectancy was deemed to be extremely short, and yet he continued to live another 18 years of a happy, adventurous, and fulfilling life. Even though he faced health challenges, he met each hurdle with grace and determination. He packed more life into his 18 years than most of us do in a lifetime. Scott possessed extraordinary courage, strength, and resilience, which was a constant source of inspiration for those who knew him.
Scott was an extremely intelligent, hardworking, and industrious man. He mastered a diverse collection of self-taught skills. He was well versed in mechanics, electronics, engineering, and construction. He was a problem solver who could build, create, or fix anything. He was also endowed with an imaginative mind that allowed him to express himself in multiple art forms. His masterpieces included paintings, pottery, woodworking, and metal sculptures, as well as many other mediums. Each piece was inspired, unique, and unconventional. Scott was also a resourceful cook whose ingenuity allowed him to use whatever ingredients were on hand to invent delicious meals. He sometimes even made tasty homemade bread to compliment those meals.
Scott was an outdoorsman at heart. He enjoyed golf, basketball, and bowling. However, the things that delighted him the most, were epic outdoor adventures. He loved camping, exploring national parks, and having exciting experiences along the way. His most recent journey was a two-month solo camping trip throughout the west coast and Canada. He has traveled throughout the United States as well as many other countries. During those travels, he created amazing and legendary experiences for himself and others. Unquestionably, his most daring and unique feat was walking on the wings of an airplane, flying through the clouds in the sky!
Scott was truly a multi-talented man who was highly skilled, creative, and extremely funny. He was a sensitive soul who was always there with a hand to hold, an ear to listen, and a heart to understand. Let us not dwell on his passing, but celebrate his life, the love he gave, and the lessons he taught us.
Scott Altemus is survived by his parents, Thomas and Vicky Altemus, his sister, Amy Altemus, his nephew, Brayden Altemus, his aunts and uncles, Mary Altemus, Kim (Shari) Neill, Paul (Luann) Neill, Laurie Frame-Drake, as well as his ten cousins.
