

Doris Pieroth passed away September 3, 2018 at the age of 88 in Norman, OK. She was born to Herschel Dean and Lucille Hinson in Seattle, WA. The family moved to Prague, OK in 1942 when she was in elementary school. Doris graduated from Oklahoma College for Women in Chickasha, OK in 1951 with a degree in physical education and then went on to receive a master's degree from Smith College in Northampton, MA. She taught physical education at Smith and the University of Colorado in Boulder before meeting her future husband, John P Pieroth, Jr. She moved back to Seattle after their marriage where she and John lived ever since. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in June 2018.
Doris taught classes at the University of Washington while earning her PhD in History. She worked as an independent historian focusing on the history of women in the Pacific Northwest. Doris was active in the Pacific Northwest Historian's Guild, serving in many positions, including President. She had several books published, including Their Day in the Sun, a history of several women who made up the US Olympic Team in the 1932 Olympics, The Hutton Settlement: A Home for One Man's Family a history of a home for children in Spokane, Seattle Women Teachers of the Interwar Years: Shapers of a Livable City, and We Still Call Him Coach, a biography of Les Habegger, former coach at Seattle University and Seattle Supersonics.
She is survived by her husband John, of Seattle, daughters Suzanne Groatman (Hunter) of Kirkland, Jeanne Kloser (Kris) of Seattle and granddaughter Hilary Groatman Byrum of Austin, TX.
A memorial service will be held Monday, October 1st at 10 a.m. at Acacia Memorial Park, 14951 Bothell Way, Seattle.
