Ed was released to his heavenly reward on Thursday, January 6, 2011. He was able to spend his last Christmas on earth surrounded by his family.
Ed was born in Burlington, Colorado to Lilah Brown Dorothy and Ernest Dorothy. He was later joined by two brothers, Dick and Denny. He was raised in Winlock, Washington and graduated from Winlock High School in 1946. Ed attended Pacific Lutheran College where he met and later married Edna Haglund. He knew from the time he was in junior high that he wanted to be a teacher. After graduating from PLC in 1950, he spent two years in the Army during the Korean War. Ed returned to marry Edna in 1952. Both got teaching jobs on Vashon Island, then moved to Kirkland where he taught and was a school administrator for 31 years in the Lake Washington School District.
Ed and Edna raised their family in Kirkland, WA. Edna passed away in 2006. Ed continued to live in Kirkland until his death. Ed is survived by his three children, son David (Wendy) Dorothy of Kirkland, daughter Cathy (Paul) Speral of Fargo, ND, and daughter Sue (Mark) Hardin of Philomath, OR, as well as 5 grandchildren ranging in ages from 15- 26.
Ed was a charter member of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Bellevue where he served in numerous ways including Board President and Co-chair of the Building Committee. He also served the educational community in many ways. He coached, counseled, taught, and served as an administrator. Ed’s calm demeanor and sense of fairness made him a much loved and favorite principal of both students and staff.
Ed will be missed by so many. His legacy lives on in the lives he has shaped in his life-long commitment and service to others. His memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 15 at 11 AM at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Bellevue.
