Julia Nichola Tine and her twin sister were born on February 18, 1922 in Ipiros, Greece in the village of Povla, to Nicholas and Fotini Raptis. She was the youngest of four girls and two boys. After the Second World War she left Povla and moved to Athens where she lived for sixteen years. One day she decided to visit her twin sister Olga, in Vancouver B.C., Canada. After she arrived, Julia found an obstacle in her plan for a six-month visit, because that was when she met Charles Tine, to whom she married in 1952 and became a permanent resident of Canada. Julia had arrived in Canada three days before Christmas 1951, and met Charlie on March 10th 1952 and became engaged in April 1952. After a long engagement of two months, she and Charlie married on June 16th 1952.
Julia had two children: Frances Tine Swain in 1954 and Chris Tine in 1956. Charlie and Julia lived in Vancouver, Canada until 1967 when they decided to move to Seattle, Washington. Julia had love to spare and many talents, and she made her family, friends and the Church the focus of her gifts. She was a member St. George’s Orthodox Church in Vancouver BC where she taught Sunday School and was a member of the Daughters of Penelope and the Philoptoches Society. Julia enjoyed her memberships in Vancouver, so she continued with them after her move to Seattle. Julia joined the St. Demetrios choir and sang with them for 25 years. After the children graduated from school, Julia enrolled in Seattle Central Community College and continued to donate her time and talents freely. Every church festival and bazaar kept Julia busy and meeting people; and The National Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, March of Dimes and The Heart Foundation all benefitted from her contributions. Julia helped friends and neighbors whenever she was needed, and always seemed to know when her friends had a baby so she would be busy knitting booties or buying baby clothes for them. Julia enjoyed gardening, was an expert in Greek baking and cooking, and an accomplished seamstress who made stylish clothing for herself and her family. Even Fran’s Barbie’s enjoyed couture gowns and clothing. Julia’s talents were so advanced that she alone cared for Father Homer's church vestments. In 1986 Julia was given the Mother of the Year award from her neighbors on 40th Avenue, for which her family was very proud.
Julia passed away on January 15, 2014 and is survived by her husband of 62 years, Charles Tine; her daughter Frances Tine Swain and son Chris Tine. She will be deeply missed.
