Julio Andres Castro passed away unexpectedly at the age of 62 while hiking Mount Si in Washington State on September 24th, 2022. At this untimely occurrence, he was with his brother, Carlos Antonio Castro, his father, Jose Andres Castro and his long-time friend Raul Reyes.
Julio was born on August 18th, 1960 in Santa Ana, El Salvador. His mother, Edith Imelda Castaneda, and his father Jose Andres Castro survive him. He is also survived by his older sister, Clara del Carmen Cortez, his younger brother, Carlos, his step-brother, Hugo Castaneda as well as his wife, Ana Miriam Castro, his two children, Miriam Imelda Castro and Alejandro Ernesto Castro, his son-in-law Malcolm Che Johnson and his two grandchildren, Macéo Malcolm Johnson and Tiago Andres Johnson. He is predeceased by his younger brother Alejandro Ernesto Castro.
Due to circumstances of economic hardship and the evolving civil war in El Salvador, Julio’s childhood was fragmented by not growing up with his parents nor all of his siblings in the same household. He experienced a shattering tragedy in the death of his younger brother, Alex, when Julio himself was only 14 years old. But Julio was always determined to provide for himself and his siblings. He grew up working in his father’s jewelry shop where he learned how to assemble and repair watches. Later in life this became one of his passions and it was likely this experience that led to his fascination with mechanical things. He aspired to become an engineer so that one day he could invent a perpetual motion clock. He graduated high school with a focus on mathematics and physics. His plan to attend college to study engineering was thwarted by the onset of the civil war.
In 1978 Julio met and then married the love of his life, Ana. They were neighbors in the same apartment complex and Ana would bring home warm cheese bread from work that Julio couldn't resist. On January 22, 1980 they welcomed their first child, Miriam, although Julio could not be present at the birth because just one day prior an urban guerilla command attacked the National Guard stationed in the city of Santa Ana. It was too dangerous for him to traverse the town to get to the hospital in time. Within months of his daughter’s birth, plans were made to flee the country with the ultimate goal of making it to the United States. Julio and Carlos had to make the journey separately from his wife and child for their own safety.
Julio arrived to Los Angeles in 1981. Not long after, he moved his family to Seattle for better job prospects and this is where his father had been living. In 1984, he obtained his certificate in Automotive and Diesel Mechanic. In his spare time he always had a car project that he was working on. He eventually became a Machinist for Boeing where he worked as a jet engine assembler and mechanic. On March 5th, 1985 his son was born, Alex. He finally had a child who shared his love of mechanical things. One time they took apart and reassembled the engine of Alex’s lemon BMW using YouTube instructions… in German!
Julio’s biggest moments of pride were likely that his two children graduated from college. Miriam is a physician anesthesiologist now living in California and Alex is a civil engineer who still lives only 5 minutes away. Julio was also proud of the success of the family business, run by his wife and his sister-in-law Aminta Elgin. After Julio retired from Boeing in 2017, he became the official handy man for the business although he served as such for the family for most of his life.
Aside from being the ultimate handyman, Julio was a known bragster. He had a charming way of bragging though, as he often liked to talk about the accomplishments of his family as his own. He loved to show off his collection of watches, antiques and vintage music. His prized possession was a bright red Austin Healy Sprite convertible. He loved to torture his wife with Sunday rides while wearing antique spectacles and Ana had to use a head scarf to keep her hair in place and to keep the exhaust inhalation at bay.
Those who really knew Julio, knew he had a temper. His sarcasm would sometimes get him in trouble. Although he burned a few bridges in his lifetime, he was also compassionate and loving. He was always there for the friends and family he cared for. He was so happy to spend time with his two grandchildren. Macéo gets his charisma and inquisitiveness from grandpa while Tiago seems to have inherited the temper and ingenuity.
Although Julio’s early life was filled with adversity and tragedy, Julio lived his last years full of joy and accomplishment surrounded by his loved ones and doing all the things he enjoyed. Despite the heartbreak his family is experiencing at his sudden passing, we know that Julio is now with the spirit of his little brother Alex.
A funeral service for Julio will be held Saturday, October 22, 2022 from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Forest Lawn Funeral Home, 6701 30th Ave SW, Seattle, Washington. A born will occur.
