Charles was born on March 17, 1941, in Louisville, Kentucky to Justina and James Smith.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Georgia Smith; sister Patricia Hettinger; sons David Smith (Connie) and Steven Smith; grandchildren, Shelby Smith (Josh), Zach Smith (Kerstyn), Alex Smith, Jordan Smith (Melanie), Taylor Dole (Cameron), and Georgia Smith; and one great-grandson, Jasper Oakes.
He is preceded in death by his mother, Justina Smith, and father, James Smith; brothers David Greenwell and Thomas Smith; sister Catherine McIntire (Daniel); brother-in-law Jack Hettinger; and many other friends and family.
Charles grew up in Edgewood. He loved cars, camping, fishing, and boating. He held many jobs over the course of his life, including serving in the fire department and National Guard, and running a carpet installation and cleaning business.
More than anything, he loved his wife, Georgia. They married at Guardian Angels Catholic Church on January 16, 1965. Charles spent 61 years as a devoted husband, providing and caring for Georgia. Their love is a testament to all who have bore witness to it. They created a beautiful family, raising children, and then caring deeply for grandchildren and a great grandchild.
Charles had a wonderful sense of humor and never missed an opportunity to laugh- particularly at himself. He will be remembered as a selfless and compassionate man. His family finds comfort in knowing that he is now with his mother and father, brothers and sister, driving his car, and eating as many cookies and skittles as he wants. He will be missed dearly.
