Schoppenhorst Underwood & Brooks Funeral Home history

The Schoppenhorst legacy of care began in 1892, when a young man named Edward Schoppenhorst left his family’s laundry business in Louisville’s West End to follow his heart into funeral service. The son of a German immigrant, Edward opened his own funeral home in a grand 1865 residence on West Market Street—a place still known for its elegant architecture and distinctive 11-foot glass door, handcrafted in France and inlaid with glass from every country in Europe at the time of its manufacture.

For nearly 50 years, Edward and his wife, Flora, served Louisville families with compassion, respect and unwavering attention to detail. Their kindness and professionalism built a foundation of trust that became the hallmark of the Schoppenhorst name.

After Edward died in 1941, Flora continued to lead with grace and vision. She later helped found Highlands Funeral Home and remained devoted to serving others until her own death in 1965.

A new chapter began in 1976, when Ben Underwood purchased the West Market Street funeral home. With a deep commitment to community and care, Ben and his team expanded the business and strengthened its reputation for exceptional service.

In 1991, Ben and his mother, Hallie Kruse, joined Neill Brooks to open Schoppenhorst Underwood & Brooks Funeral Home in Shepherdsville. Hallie earned her funeral director’s license in 1994, helping to guide both the business and the families they served. Over the years, the Shepherdsville location expanded to include a chapel and spacious visitation areas designed for comfort and connection.

In 2015, the family’s vision grew again with the opening of a second location in Mt. Washington—a bright, modern space created with the same heartfelt purpose that inspired Edward more than a century ago.

Today, Schoppenhorst Underwood & Brooks Funeral Home continues to support families with genuine care, professionalism and service excellence.

Brookland Cemetery history

Schoppenhorst Underwood & Brooks Funeral Home & Brookland CemeteryThe story of Brookland Cemetery reaches back to the earliest days of Kentucky’s history. In 1779, Joseph Brooks and his young family journeyed down the Ohio River to settle in the untamed frontier that would one day bear their name: Brooks, Kentucky. Life beyond the Alleghenies was rugged and uncertain, but the Brooks family’s courage and determination helped shape one of Bullitt County’s first communities.

Along the old Wilderness Trail, the family built Brooks Station—a fortified stop for weary pioneers traveling west from Virginia to Louisville. Like many early settlers, the Brooks also established a small family cemetery near their homestead, one of thousands that dotted Kentucky’s early landscape. Though that original burial ground has since been relocated, its spirit lives on in the Brooks family’s enduring commitment to serving others.

As the area grew in the late 1800s, private family plots gave way to community cemeteries. The Brooks family helped lead that transition, founding Hebron Cemetery in 1894. Solomon Neill Brooks II designed its first section and devoted his life to its care, a family tradition that continued for generations under the guidance of a board of directors.

By 1986, with Hebron nearing capacity, the Brooks family set aside more of their historic property to create Brookland Cemetery across the road. Its rolling hills and graceful monuments reflect both the beauty of the land and the legacy of those who rest there. Many of the same families who buried loved ones in Hebron now continue their story at Brookland, where newer generations lie beside their ancestors.
