David Allen Smith

David Allen Smith, age 72, of Louisville, returned to his Heavenly Father on Friday, April 17, 2026, peacefully in his sleep. He was born in Louisville on Monday, March 1, 1954, to the late Jimmy and Sinnie Smith.

Dave was a graduate of Butler High School and retired from BASF Corporation. He was a member of Beechland Baptist Church, where he faithfully volunteered on Fridays with the Food Distribution, offering steady help and quiet service to others.

Away from work and community commitments, Dave found enjoyment in simple, meaningful pleasures—camping at Nolin Lake, and spending time fishing and boating. He also held a devoted love for the University of Louisville Cardinals and for Diet Mt. Dew.

Family was the most important part of Dave’s life. He was married to the love of his life, Pat, for 49 years. Together they enjoyed spending time taking walks at Bernheim or Jefferson Forest. Dave was always present in the lives of his children and grandchildren, offering steady support and devotion. His grandchildren could always count on Papaw to be there—faithfully attending their activities and events, a familiar and reassuring presence in the moments that mattered most.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Dan and Charlie.

He is survived by the love of his life, Patricia “Pat” Smith; his daughters, Tracy Macfarlane (Steve) and Penny Durham (Terry); his grandchildren, Loren (Jack), Sean, Bryce, Taylor, and Luke along with nieces, nephews, sisters-in-laws and friends.

The family would like to express their gratitude to the Hosparus staff at Baptist East for their care and compassion. In lieu of flowers in David’s honor donations can be made to Journey Christian Church Building Fund or Beechland Baptist Building Fund.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 25, 2026, in the chapel of Schoppenhorst, Underwood and Brooks Funeral Home, 4895 N. Preston Hwy. Family and friends may pay their respect on Saturday from 1pm till time of service at 4pm.
