He was born on May 31, 1950, in Louisville, KY to the late Charles Orville and Myrtle Dorothy (Jones) Yocum.
Donnie was a triplet, the second youngest of ten children. He often told the story of how he didn’t want to be born first so he pushed his older brother Ronnie out, but he didn’t want to be last either, so he jumped out into the world next before his youngest brother Johnny. The trio made local headlines after their birth.
He was a brilliant, charismatic man; he had a quick-witted sense of humor and loved to tell stories and share jokes. He never met a stranger and found joy in helping others. Donnie spent over 30 years working as a Service Repairman for Pepsi Cola. He was extremely mechanically inclined; he could easily repair just about any machine and was a true handyman when anything broke around the house. He enjoyed being outdoors, working in his “shop” out back while listening to his music, and taking all the backroads he could find. In his younger years, he enjoyed camping, hunting, and fishing. After his grandchildren arrived, he loved dropping off fresh Krispy Kreme donuts and other treats for them to enjoy.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, seven siblings (Leona, Buddy, Barbara, Cleva, Charles, Sharon, and Ronald) and many pets including his beloved dog Cooper. He is survived by his wife of 50 1/2 years, Mary (Buttermann) Yocum, two daughters, Stephanie Lyles and Theresa (Eric) Wicker, two grandchildren, Landon and Clara Wicker, his siblings Carolyn and Johnny, along with many other family and friends including David Edge and Scott Reesor.
Visitation will be held at Schoppenhorst, Underwood, and Brooks Funeral Home in Shepherdsville, KY on Monday, March 23rd from 3:00-8:00 pm and on Tuesday, March 24th from 12:00-2:00 pm. His funeral will follow at 2:00 with burial in Brookland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in his memory to the Bullitt County Animal Shelter (cash or checks can be dropped off during visitation and will be taken to the shelter) or if you prefer to make a donation by card that can be done over the phone to Shepherdsville Animal Hospital where the shelter has an emergency vet fund.
