John Francis Fritz Jr., D.M.D., R.Ph., a kind and compassionate soul, passed away in his home on February 22, 2018 at the age of 55. He was born in Cleveland, Ohio on July 16, 1963 to the late John Francis and Theresa (Moran) Fritz. From a young age, John was a charismatic and social person who quickly made friends wherever he went. He had a contagious laugh and a smile that put people at ease. Although he transferred from Eastern to Male high school his junior year, his energetic and friendly personality helped him get elected as Senior Class Vice President. John could strike up a conversation with anyone and was known as a great story-teller. In college, he served as the Chapter President of his fraternity, Lambda Chi Alpha, and also as Alumni Director.
John had a quick wit and a sharp mind, but more importantly knew the value of hard work. He graduated from the University of Kentucky with a doctorate in pharmacy and a few short years later was accepted into the University of Louisville's dental school where he eventually earned another doctorate in Dental Medicine. His commitment to scholarship was reflected in his many awards and extracurricular activities such as recognition on the Dean's list for academic excellence, membership in UofL's Scientific Research Society, and the completion of an additional Master's degree in Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology while still in dental school. But throughout those years of dedication to his studies, John never lost sight of his ultimate goal; to love and serve. He was genuinely interested in the well-being of others and his many friends will attest to his generous loving spirit. He was never too busy to answer a patient's questions or ease their fears before a procedure. He made himself equally available to his friends and family and was a devoted son and brother.
John was a lover of all animals but was particularly fond of Great Danes. Perhaps he felt an unspoken camaraderie with these gentle giants. While some people would shy away from such enormous beasts, John loved them all the more for being often misunderstood. Amidst all the relationships in his life, nothing came close to the deep love and affection he felt for his children, Jack and Elise, who are truly his greatest accomplishment. He never missed an opportunity to pull out a photo and show of his children. He bragged on them for every accomplishment made and milestone passed. They were the light of his life and no father has ever been more proud.
He is survived by his two beloved children Elise Eryn and John Francis "Jack" Fritz III; his sister Kathy (Jeff) Campbell, his step-brothers Ronnie (Marianne) Fritz and William Fritz; and his nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held at Epiphany Catholic Church (914 Old Harrods Creek Rd., Louisville, KY) on February 28, 2018 at 9am, followed by a memorial service at 10 am.
