It is with heavy hearts that we mourn the departure of our beloved Mother Claire Webley. She peacefully transitioned from life to eternal heavenly rest on Saturday, May 18, in Loganville, Georgia, surrounded by her family.
Claire was the epitome of love. She knew only how to feed, nurture, and give unconditionally. She was the wind beneath our wings. While our lives will never be the same without her, her memory will forever be with us.
Claire Hyacinth Reid-Webley was born on July 16, 1939, in the parish of Manchester, Jamaica, West Indies, to Evelyn Wilson and Lyndon Reid. She was raised alongside her five siblings: Derrick, Gloria, Steadley, Lawford, and Thomas (deceased).
Claire was like a second mother to her siblings and a nurturer to many other children, whether they were family, friends, or strangers. She took them in and cared for them as if they were her own. Claire was caring, compassionate, loving, and kind to all she encountered – she was dearly loved by all her family and friends.
After attending Bellefield Primary School, Claire moved to Kingston, Jamaica, where she studied to become a dressmaker. She soon put her skills to use and was employed at a garment factory in Kingston.
While residing in Kingston in 1962, Claire met her late husband, Elva Webley (deceased), who she married in 1967. The couple then migrated to the Bronx, New York, in 1984 where they lived, raised their family, worked, and attended church for many years. Claire was a devoted Christian of the Apostolic faith for more than 60 years.
Together, Claire and Elva raised their children: Jerrene, Monica, Wayne, Victor, Yvette, Levant, Tony, and Devon. Claire instilled in her children the values of family, perseverance, and togetherness. Each child has gone on to raise families of their own, making Claire a proud grandmother to more than 20 and great-grandmother to more than 10.
She made the best black cake in the world. As soon as you said “birthday”, she said, “where and when” and started heating the oven. She was already ready to celebrate life, love, and family.
During the retirement phase of her life, Claire relocated to Georgia, where she lived with her daughters Jerrene and later Monica, with whom she spent the final years of her life.
A visitation for Claire will be held Friday, June 7, 2024 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Eternal Hills Funeral Home, 3594 Stone Mountain Highway, Snellville, GA 30039. A funeral service will occur Saturday, June 8, 2024 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM, 3594 Stone Mountain Highway, Snellville, GA 30039.
