

James Curtis Cline, 92, of Grayson Georgia 30017 passed away on September 6th, 2010 at Rosemont Nursing home in Stone Mountain, Georgia after approximately a two year illness. He was born in Columbus Georgia on Oct. 3 1917, the son of the late George Thomas Cline an engineer specializing in building dams and the late Myrtle Phillips they moved several times working for Stone Webster finally settling in Albany, Georgia in 1924 during the depression. He was preceded in death by a sister Ms. Catherine Cline and two brothers, Mr. Bernard Cline and Mr. Byron Cline and survived by a younger brother Mr. Homer Cline of Albany, Georgia. He was a graduate of Albany High in Albany, Georgia in the class of 1935 with two diplomas in science and classics. James was a veteran who served his beloved country in the Navy from 1939 to 1947, throughout the entire World War II conflict. He spent most of the war years aboard the USS Philadelphia, a light cruiser which he joined up with in Washington State and later at Pearl Harbor. Several months prior to the Pearl Harbor bombing his ship went back to the Atlantic through the Panama Canal in secrecy and was in the Boston Navy yard when Pearl was bombed. The Philadelphia later saw action primarily in the Atlantic and Mediterranean campaigns at Anzio, Salerno, Sicily and others. James (“JC”) served as a Chief Petty Officer and commanded one of five turrets during those campaigns. He ended his sea duty on a USS Tanner as the ranking Chief Officer and was Chief Master of Arms. He left the Navy at the Brooklyn Navy yard on June 12 1947. After WWII he was employed by Feldman Brothers, a well established decorating firm specializing in drapery and upholstery in New York City New York for several years. He moved his family to Albany, Georgia in 1953 to be closer to family. He was self employed, had his own business, the Albany Upholstery Shop in decorating and upholstery until he retired in 1979. James was the loving husband of Lucille Raymond for 51 years of Albany Georgia, originally of Montreal & Quebec City Canada. They met in New York City New York during WWII and were married 12/31/1943. She was a career nurse working at several hospitals including Phoebe Putney hospital in Albany where she worked in the intensive care and ER, she also retired in 1979. James and Lucille traveled during throughout their retirement visiting their children and grandchildren as well as several places over the world however they frequently visited family in Atlanta and Canada. James is survived by his two devoted sons, Garry J. Cline and his wife Linda J. Cline of Snellville Georgia and Raymond W. Cline of New York City New York. Three grandchildren, Christopher J. Cline of Atlanta and Laura J. Cline of Washington DC, and Jennifer R. Cline of New York City New York and one great grandson Jonathan So Cline of Atlanta. A graveside service will be at 1:00 PM on Friday, September 17, 2010, at Andersonville National Historic Site Cemetery, 496 Cemetery Rd, Andersonville, GA, with Dr. Loren Pugh of Lawrenceville Georgia officiating.
