James Alton Smalley, 88, died on Wednesday, December 29, 2010, at his home in Snellville. James was born on January 15, 1922 in Westminister, SC to James William and Ila Annie Smalley and grew up in the Anderson County area. A veteran of three wars, World War II, Vietnam and Korea, he proudly served in the United States Army, earning a Purple Heart and many other medals and commendations for valor and bravery. Mr. Smalley retired from service with the rank of Command Sergeant Major. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Nina Allen Smalley, daughter Janet Smalley Yoest and husband Dan, sons Michael Smalley and John Smalley and wife Susan of CA, sisters Betty Jo Threlkeld, Patsy Patterson and Peggy Dunlap of Anderson, SC and seven grandchildren.
