From an early age, Mona embodied strength, compassion, and determination that touched everyone she encountered. She went on to study medicine at Milwaukee Area Technical College, after graduating from Percy L. Julian High School in Chicago.
Mona retired in 2007 as the Head Supervisor of the Laboratory at Gwinnett Medical Center in Lawrenceville, Georgia. Her professionalism, warmth, and commitment to patient care made her a respected and beloved member of the medical community.
In June 2000, she married Gary McCluskey, her loving and devoted husband. Together, they shared a bond built on love and family — a partnership that stood strong through life’s joys and certainly through life's challenges.
Mona was preceded in death by her parents, Elizabeth Carter and Walter Martin; her grandmother, Arbeavor Helm; her sisters, Denise Cooper and Caprice Blackmon; and her brothers, Ronald Moore and Wendell Martin.
She leaves to cherish her memory with her husband, Gary McCluskey of Dacula, GA; her sons, Cortez Martin of Lawrenceville, GA and Vladimir Beck of Snellville, GA; her daughters, Carla Taylor of Stockbridge, GA and Carlethia (Rickey) Daughtrey of Atlanta, GA; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; her brother, Maurice Blackmon of Milwaukee, WI; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and cherished friends.
She was truly the life of the party. She had a smile that could lift any mood and a personality that refused to be ignored. Yes, Mona was stubborn, proud and unapologetic, but once she made up her mind, there was no changing it. She stood firm in her beliefs, her boundaries, and her love for her family. Mona's love, strength, and generosity will continue to shine through the many lives she touched. Her joy, sass, and love will echo in every memory shared by every lucky person who knew her.
A memorial service for Mona will be held Saturday, May 24, 2025 at 2:00 PM in the Chapel of Eternal Hills Funeral Home, 3594 Stone Mountain Highway, Snellville, GA 30039.
