Roy Sylvester Miller was known as many things to many people. He was a loved one, a friend, and someone special. To family and friends who knew him best, Roy will be remembered as a very exceptional person.
Roy was born on January 6, 1922 to James and Anita Miller in Limon, Costa Rica. He was one of twelve children and enjoyed doing activities with his siblings. He and his siblings experienced rivalries typical of a growing family, but they shared many life experiences over the years.
As a young boy, Roy had a number of interests. Like most children, he enjoyed playing and making up games. He was curious about the world around him and was often eager to explore it. Roy's memorable achievements included helping his father tend to the farm.
After his parents passed, Roy took the role of protector and father figure to his siblings. He worked hard as a young man, learning responsibility and the value of a dollar, his ambition led him to relocate to Panama so he could work on the Panama Canal.
In 1955, Roy realized there was more to life than hard work. He courted Elena Beckford and together they were blessed with five children; Rose, Carmen, Frank, Norma and Hernan. Empathic and loyal, Roy worked hard to be a good father to his children and he did his best to fulfill their needs. Another blessing for Roy was the gift of nineteen grandchildren, Leticia, Devon, Felicia, Tasha, Shawntel, Jennifer, Frankie, Christopher, Ashley, Andrea, Angelica, Christian, Iyanla, Larrissa, Louis, Joanna, Clarisse, Ethan, and Mia. Roy was dearly devoted to his grandchildren and loved spending time with them.
Showing a strong work ethic, in 1966 Roy relocated to New York and worked diligently. His primary occupation as a day laborer exposed him to many forms of work such as on cargo ships, building eighteen wheeler trucks, and buildings at Princeton University. Roy always sought to be a team player, doing what was necessary in order to get the job done.
Roy passed away on September 29, 2016 at Kindred at Lafayette Nursing home due to natural causes. He is survived by his five children, nineteen grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren. Services were held at White Oak Hills Baptist Church. Roy was laid to rest in Eternal Hills Memorial Gardens in Snelleville, GA.
Simply stated, Roy was a good and kind person, an individual who will for all time be remembered by his family and friends as being a caring and giving person, someone who was a vital part of their lives. Roy leaves behind him a legacy of life-long friendships and many cherished memories. Everyone whose life he touched will always remember Roy Sylvester Miller.
