I have the utmost respect and admiration for Coach Tony of Southington High School. He did an excellent job with the tennis program at the school, and contributed significantly to our league and state tennis organizations. His passion for the game, love of coaching student-athletes and selfless devotion to the betterment of high school sports remain as standards towards which we should all strive. I send my condolences to the family and, especially, to Sylvia who was a much appreciated fixture at our Hall-Southington matches.

I first met coach Tony when I was in elementary school. After joining the parks and rec tennis camp he offered to give me one on one lessons. These lessons impacted me in more ways than I could ever imagine. Coach Tony really cared about me and worked tirelessly to assure I became a good player. I was always impressed with the contraptions he built and used throughout, such as a pvc pipe designed to help get the hang of serving. What were supposed to be hour long lessons easily doubled in time because coach Tony cared that much about me improving my game. Eventually he encouraged me to take part in match play during the summer, and finally he helped me work my way up to the SHS tennis team. Tony was such a great coach and balanced competition with sportsmanship and having fun. He really helped me grow as a person and introduced me to so many of the friends I still have today. I am forever thankful for all Tony has done for me and for Southington tennis as well.

Dear Sylvia and family,
We were so saddened to hear of Coach Tony's passing. When our son Michael first began working with Tony as a 6th grader, it was immediately apparent how much he truly loved kids and tennis. His patience, kindness and encouragement while working with Michael was so incredibly refreshing. We would sign up for an hour of private instruction, which Tony would turn into an hour and a half or more, such was his dedication.
I vividly recall him telling me that his goal was to have Michael enjoy playing, and to also get a "belly laugh" out of him, as he was so serious. We loved the stories Coach Tony would share during and after these lessons. We also loved seeing the different contraptions that he engineered and loaded in and out of his car each week.
When high school came and Michael joined Coach Tony's tennis team we can honestly say it was a life changer for our son. Being part of those teams gave us all a lot to enjoy and made the high school years so much better for Michael. We are eternally grateful to have had Coach Tony as part of our lives, and could never repay him for all that he did for our son both on and off the tennis courts.

Coach Tony,
After getting cut from the high school baseball team, I found tennis as my next sport. Freshman year, I didn't start once but I still had an absolute blast just being on the team and learning the game. Sophomore year, when you became head coach, the team became even more fun.
You introduced the ladder system, a system which held true the entire time you coached the team. I remember the other kids on the team laughing about it, when you first taught it to us in the classroom. They may have laughed that day, but they sure came to respect it!
What an excellent lesson, about how "looking good" truly didn't matter. It didn't matter how hard you served, what form you had when you hit your forehand, or what attire you wore. The players who won consistently earned their starting spot. You always gave everyone a chance and you taught all of us that hard work + the right opportunity can lead to great things. I still use your lessons from high school tennis, in my life today.
Thanks again for making high school tennis season so special each and every Spring season.
-James Nitz aka "The Lob King"
P.S. I'll always remember that time Fermi's head coach refused to play us again because of my style of play. You defended me that day, and you remained in my corner, forever. I am so grateful to have had you as my high school tennis coach.

Dear Sylvia and Family, We are so very sorry for your profound loss. Southington has lost a tennis legend and an upstanding man of integrity, both professionally and personally. Tony touched so so many lives, always unselfishly sharing his heart, soul, and wisdom. I know I'm not alone in having no regrets for every hour logged chatting with Tony! I had the honor of presenting Tony with a birthday cake in celebration of his 77th birthday with the SHS tennis team. Witnessing the boys' love, respect, and excitement for their beloved Coach unexpectedly brought me to tears. Rest in peace Coach Tony. You will never be forgotten.

It is with a heavy heart to learn the passing of our beloved Coach Tony. Tony has been our coach, mentor and a friend. He tutored our 3 children from Rec Park Tennis Camps all the way to High School Tennis, imparting not only technical aspects but also the life-lessons that go with it. We have been privileged to be under his tutelage and just to be around him. May our Lord grant eternal rest unto him…. To Sylvia and the rest of the family - Thank You for sharing him to us and to the community. We pray that you may find the strength and courage to carry on…. With much love - The Balaoings.

Our condolences to Sylvia, Sandi and all of the Mauro family.........
Tony lived an active, full life and I felt lucky to be a part of it.
He started me and my daughter in tennis, taught me most of what I know about the game, mentored me in coaching, and introduced me to the Sunday morning crew which I have been with for close to 20 years. We played with and against each other on numerous occasions, and he instilled confidence in my game.
I feel honored to have had him as a friend, someone I could talk about any subject to. His passion for the game rubbed off on many. Mike and Lisa Flannery

When I was a kid I knew two things about Tony - my dad said he was a tough player and his car, the Mustang that was always parked in front of the Rec. courts. I'm so thankful I actually got to know the man as his assistant coach decades later. He was a terrific mentor and a great guy. My heart goes out to you Sylvia, I'm going to miss seeing him at the courts.

Tony was a valued member of the central CT high school tennis coaching family. He was one of those coaches you could rely on to be teaching more than technical skills. His teams were honest, respectful, and they played with heart while clearly having fun - all of which reflects on what a great coach they had. Tennis coaches spend a lot of time with each other on the side lines outside the fences; time with Tony was always a pleasure. He will be missed.

Tony and I had some of the most competitive tennis matches imaginable at Peck Park in Bristol. He was a fierce opponent on the court, and one of the nicest guys off the court. I will always remember him especially when I play the game we both loved.
My deepest sympathy to his lovely wife, Sylvia, and his entire family. We are all better for knowing him.

Sylvia and family- I am devastated by the news that Tony has passed away- He was such an amazing Coach simply for how he treated his players and loved watching them grow: besides his knowledge of tennis.
He loved telling us stories about the two of you ice skating and all the other things you did. He definitely loved you and the life you enjoyed together. I am truly saddened by this loss and my thoughts and prayers are with all of you.

Sylvia and Sandy we are so sorry for the loss of Coach Tony. His personality was larger than life and he made a huge impact in the life of our son, James. Lessons early on at Rec Park and then to be able to have Coach Tony be named the SHS Coach when James was a freshmen was a blessing. We loved the time we spent chatting at the courts and having some wine and sharing stories on occasion. We send love and hugs to all. Thanks for sharing him with our family.
